No: Indian Motorcycle is not shown as shutting down. What changed in 2026 is ownership. Polaris completed the sale of a majority stake in Indian Motorcycle to Carolwood LP on February 2, 2026. Indian had already announced a 2026 model lineup, so the headline’s “going away” refers to Indian leaving Polaris—not to the brand or its motorcycles disappearing.
What happened to Indian Motorcycle in 2026?
Polaris announced a planned separation and majority-stake sale to Carolwood LP on October 13, 2025. It then reported that the transaction had closed on February 2, 2026. Indian Motorcycle is now a standalone business rather than a Polaris-owned brand. Polaris’s transition announcement said Indian would continue sales, service, and support for dealers and customers during the transition; that statement addressed the transition, not every future service arrangement.
The change is corporate, not evidence that Indian is ending motorcycle production. On November 4, 2025, Indian announced its 2026 lineup, including the Sport Scout RT and new accessories for cruiser, bagger, and touring models. That announcement establishes activity for model year 2026, but does not guarantee future lineups or establish how the business will perform under its new ownership.
How did Indian compare with Harley-Davidson historically?
Indian’s history includes a period of major manufacturing prominence, but “beat Harley-Davidson for years” needs a specific measure and period. The American Motorcyclist Association describes Indian as the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer in the 1910s. The same retrospective says Harley-Davidson outsold Indian five to one at the end of World War II. Those statements point to different periods and measures; they do not establish a continuous Indian sales lead over Harley.

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History dates Indian motorcycle production to 1901 and says the company ceased manufacturing motorcycles for the public in 1953. Its collection description gives approximate Indian production of 5,000 motorcycles per year, rising to 10,000 per year; it does not provide matching annual Harley figures for a direct comparison. The museum also identifies 1940–1941 as a high point for civilian sales and usage before manufacturers shifted toward military production. The Smithsonian’s Indian motorcycle collection provides the historical context, while the AMA retrospective supplies the manufacturer and postwar sales comparisons.
Why the Indian name has returned before
The current Indian business should not be confused with one uninterrupted manufacturer operating under the same ownership. Indian’s official history describes the original production era ending in 1953, a long production hiatus, subsequent ownership changes, and Polaris’s acquisition of the brand in 2011. The brand’s present chapter is therefore distinct from the original company’s history. Indian Motorcycle’s official history outlines that timeline.

What the ownership change means for riders
For riders, the documented near-term facts are continued 2026 product activity and the change in corporate ownership. Polaris’s closing announcement confirms that it no longer owns a majority stake; it does not establish whether dealers, service arrangements, parts availability, or product plans will change over the longer term. Those outcomes should be judged by subsequent company and dealer information rather than inferred from the ownership announcement alone.
Indian’s 2026 announcement describes Sport Scout RT factory-fitted locking rigid saddlebags and accessories across several model families. Riders considering Indian Scout accessories or luggage should confirm fitment for their exact model year and trim with the product listing or dealer; the lineup announcement does not establish compatibility for every Scout. Indian’s model archive lists current and past models.
