The History of the Ford Deuce Coupe From American Graffiti

John Milner’s yellow Deuce Coupe was a heavily customized 1932 Ford, not a stock Model B. Here’s how it was built for American Graffiti and what followed filming.

The Deuce Coupe in American Graffiti is John Milner’s customized yellow 1932 Ford coupe—not a stock Model B. Its fame comes from the film’s cruising scenes and its climactic race against Bob Falfa’s black 1955 Chevrolet; its hot-rod build and later history are distinct from Ford’s original factory specifications.

Which car is the Deuce Coupe in American Graffiti?

Lucasfilm identifies the car as a 1932 Ford and Paul Le Mat’s character, John Milner, as its driver. In the film, Milner cruises with Carol in the yellow coupe, then takes it into the climactic Paradise Road race against Bob Falfa’s black 1955 Chevrolet. The name “Deuce Coupe” is the familiar label for Milner’s screen car; more precisely, it is a customized 1932 Ford coupe. Lucasfilm’s account of the film’s production and cruising scenes and its description of the race place the car at the center of those sequences.

How did the movie car differ from a stock 1932 Ford?

The stock-car context is easy to confuse with the movie build. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History describes the Model B as a short-lived model produced from 1932 to 1934 before Ford quickly replaced it with the V-8. Its featured Model B is a four-cylinder, two-door sedan—not Milner’s coupe. The screen car was rebuilt as a hot rod, so its body and mechanical details should not be presented as factory Model B specifications. Feature Smithsonian’s Model B example Milner’s movie car
Body style Two-door sedan, according to the Smithsonian Customized coupe, according to Lucasfilm and the specialist car-history account
Engine Four-cylinder, according to the Smithsonian Reportedly a Chevrolet 327 V-8, according to the specialist car-history account
Purpose and configuration Ford production car Hot rod built for the film, with substantial body and drivetrain modifications

How was the yellow coupe built for the film?

A specialist history of the car says director George Lucas and producer Gary Kurtz chose a chopped-top coupe to create the period look they wanted. Transportation manager Henry Travers oversaw its reconstruction at Bob Hamilton’s shop. The resulting build changed both the car’s stance and its appearance:

The same specialist account reports a 1966 Chevrolet 327 engine with fuel-injection heads, a Man-A-Fre intake manifold, four Rochester 2GC two-barrel carburetors, and custom headers and exhaust. It lists a Super T-10 four-speed transmission and a 1957 Chevrolet rear end with 4:11 gears. These are reported components of the movie car’s hot-rod build, not equipment specified by Ford for a 1932 Model B. Specialist car-history account: Milner’s Coupe

That account also says the production fitted removable camera platforms to the car, leaving frame holes visible, and used the plate THX 138 as a reference to Lucas’s earlier film THX 1138. These are production details reported by the specialist history, rather than claims made in Lucasfilm’s scene description.

What happened to the coupe after filming?

The later chronology comes from the specialist car-history account, rather than an official studio or museum ownership record. It reports that the coupe returned to Close Orlandi’s shop for a repaint before More American Graffiti. Steve Fitch acquired it in a sealed auction bid in 1983, and Rick Figari bought it in 1985. Figari then entrusted the car to Roy Brizio’s shop to make it roadworthy.

The account says that work included rewiring, rebuilding the T-10 transmission and 327 engine, aluminizing the headers, and strengthening the front-fender brackets. Those repairs addressed the condition and practical needs of the customized car; they do not change the distinction between its movie-era hot-rod components and a stock 1932 Ford.
