The Honda CR-Z was a compact hybrid coupe offered with a factory six-speed manual transmission as well as a CVT. Honda’s Japanese launch release called it the world’s first hybrid with a six-speed manual, qualifying that claim as based on the company’s own research. The CR-Z’s availability and end date varied by market and model year.
Which hybrid came with a manual gearbox?
It was the Honda CR-Z, a compact coupe combining a 1.5-liter i-VTEC gasoline engine with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system. Honda documented a six-speed manual transmission in the Japanese launch specification and model history; a CVT was also offered. This was a factory configuration, not a conversion.
Honda’s February 25, 2010 Japanese launch release described the CR-Z as “the world’s first 6-speed manual transmission on a hybrid vehicle,” based on Honda’s in-house research. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently established universal first. Honda Global’s 2010 launch announcement gives the original market and launch details.
How could a hybrid use a conventional manual?
The CR-Z used IMA, with its electric motor positioned between the engine and transmission. Honda’s archived catalog says that arrangement made a manual transmission possible. It differs from the power-split hybrid layouts commonly associated with e-CVTs: Honda paired the motor and engine with a purpose-designed six-speed manual, while also offering a CVT version.

Honda’s catalog described a 45 mm shift stroke and changes to the synchronizers intended to reduce operating effort. Those are Honda’s design descriptions, not independent measurements of shift quality. In its 2011 U.S. press kit, Honda said the manual was essential to the CR-Z’s character and that the engine and IMA motor’s low-end torque offered in-gear flexibility. These are Honda’s descriptions of the system’s intended behavior; the release does not establish a single real-world fuel-economy outcome for each mode.
How much power and fuel economy did it have?
Specifications changed with the model update, and Japanese economy figures use specified laboratory test cycles. They should not be treated as real-world results or compared directly with ratings from other cycles or markets.

The figures are Japanese official specifications, not guarantees for a particular used car. Honda’s CR-Z model history records the powertrain revisions; its 2010 launch release specifies the launch-era test-cycle figures and transmission split.
When was the manual CR-Z discontinued?
There is no single date that applies to every market. Honda’s archived Japanese catalog labels the original catalog model as ending in August 2012, while Honda’s Japanese history dates a second-generation update to September 27, 2012. Those dates describe Japanese catalog and model-history milestones, not a universal global end of production.

Honda U.S.’s 2016 CR-Z announcement search-result text lists an LX with a six-speed manual and a $20,295 MSRP, with sales scheduled to begin November 3. The available evidence for that U.S. listing is limited, so it supports the manual’s presence in the 2016 U.S. model year but does not establish the final production date worldwide. Availability depended on market and year.

The documented manual CR-Z is a used-car search, not a current new-car configuration. Whether one is available depends on local listings; no live inventory is established here. When checking a specific car, confirm its market, model year, and transmission from the vehicle records and controls rather than assuming every CR-Z is manual. Honda’s archived Japanese catalog also links to an owner’s manual, but the correct edition depends on market and year.

For a meaningful comparison with another hybrid, check the transmission and hybrid architecture first, then the model year and powertrain revision. Compare fuel-economy figures only when their test cycle, market, and transmission match; the CR-Z’s Japanese 10•15 and JC08 ratings are not interchangeable with other rating systems.
