Is Dubai really building a hyperloop? The latest official project updates describe a different system: Dubai Loop, an underground passenger service using electric vehicles. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the project in February 2026, and Dubai Media Office reported preparatory and engineering work underway on 29 September 2026. Neither source describes a hyperloop using low-pressure tubes or magnetic levitation, nor does the latest update say the service is open.
What is Dubai Loop?
Dubai Loop is a planned underground transport system in which electric vehicles carry passengers through tunnels. Under the RTA’s 3 February 2026 announcement, the first phase is a 6.4-kilometre pilot with four stations, linking the Dubai International Financial Centre and Dubai Mall. The proposed full alignment would extend up to 22.2 kilometres, with 19 stations connecting the Dubai World Trade Centre and financial district with Business Bay. The RTA describes tunnels 3.6 metres in diameter, designed for vehicle transport. RTA announcement, 3 February 2026; RTA ongoing projects.
The word “Loop” can invite confusion with hyperloop proposals, but the current descriptions identify electric vehicles and tunnels, not hyperloop technology. The available official accounts do not specify a top speed, journey time, or low-pressure operating environment.
Is Dubai Loop the same as a hyperloop?
No—not on the evidence in the current project descriptions. Hyperloop proposals are generally associated with passenger or freight vehicles travelling in sealed, low-pressure tubes, sometimes with magnetic levitation. The RTA and Dubai Media Office describe Dubai Loop as an underground system using electric vehicles; they do not identify it as a hyperloop or say it uses those technologies. Dubai Media Office, 29 September 2026.

| Project or concept | Purpose and system described | Scale described | What the dated evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai Loop | Passenger transport in underground tunnels using electric vehicles. | Announced pilot: 6.4 km and four stations. Proposed full alignment: up to 22.2 km and 19 stations. | RTA announced a strategic partnership in February 2026. Dubai Media Office reported ongoing preliminary work and engineering/construction workstreams in September 2026; it did not report passenger operations. |
| Virgin Hyperloop One prototype design | Passenger hyperloop prototype design described in an RTA magazine report. | The report gives design dimensions of 18 metres long, four metres wide and about 4.5 metres high, with 19 seats; it does not establish a delivered route. | A historical design, not evidence of an operating Dubai service. The RTA magazine search result dates to approximately 2018. |
| DP World Cargospeed | A cargo venture between DP World and Virgin Hyperloop, described as intended for palletized freight using hyperloop technology. | A Dubai operating route or completed system is not stated in the 2020 report. | Dubai Media reported the venture on 15 July 2020; its future-facing claims were partner ambitions, not proof of a built or operating route. |
The comparison is about what the cited announcements describe, not a technical performance ranking. The available sources do not support a like-for-like comparison of speed, energy use, or journey time. The historical reports also do not establish the current corporate or operational status of the older passenger concept or cargo venture. RTA magazine prototype report; Dubai Media, 15 July 2020.
What has happened, and what remains a plan?
The latest dated official progress account in the cited material is Dubai Media Office’s report of 29 September 2026. It says preliminary work and delivery continued after the February agreement, and names tunnel boring machine assembly and casting concrete tunnel-lining segments among the parallel workstreams. This is evidence of reported preparation and engineering/construction activity, not a completed route, a passenger service, or independently verified operating performance.

- Alloy Material: The locomotive is made of sturdy alloy, offering a realistic texture and strong build that authentically replicates the vintage style of a classic steam train.
- Electric Operation: No need for manual pushing—the electric drive system allows the train to move automatically along the tracks, making it easy to operate and hands-free for teens.
- Electric Operation: No need for manual pushing—the electric drive system allows the train to move automatically along the tracks, making it easy to operate and hands-free for teens.
- Large Track Layout: The track measures 186.3cm × 102.8cm and includes a variety of components such as straight and curved tracks, allowing teens to build a spacious circular layout for ample playroom.
- Rich Accessories: Includes an alloy locomotive, various train cars (coal car, cargo car, etc.), traffic signs, signal lights, realistic trees, coal pieces, and more—offering customizable scenes and enhanced play value.
The RTA’s February announcement gives the project’s intended scale and forecasts, but those numbers remain announcement-era estimates:
- Cost: approximately AED 565 million for the first phase and approximately AED 2 billion for the full route, as estimated by the RTA.
- Schedule: around one year for the first phase following design completion and required preparations; around three years for implementation of the full route. These are anticipated periods, not a confirmed opening date.
- Passengers: around 13,000 passengers per day forecast for the pilot and approximately 30,000 passengers per day as projected capacity for the full route. These are not observed ridership figures.
RTA Director General and Board Chairman Mattar Al Tayer described the project as a way to improve integration between transport modes and provide first- and last-mile connections. He cited the expected pilot ridership and projected full-route capacity as part of that case. Those are the authority’s stated expectations, not an independent assessment of performance. RTA announcement, 3 February 2026.

Why is Dubai Loop being mistaken for a hyperloop?
Dubai has had earlier, highly publicized hyperloop-related concepts. An RTA magazine report described a prototype design presented in cooperation with Virgin Hyperloop One, including its dimensions and 19-seat layout. Separately, Dubai Media’s 2020 report described DP World Cargospeed as a DP World–Virgin Hyperloop venture for palletized cargo. Those historical proposals help explain the hyperloop association, but neither establishes an operating Dubai route today.
The distinction matters: a proposed vehicle design, a commercial venture, a signed implementation partnership, reported construction preparation, and an open passenger service are different stages. Dubai Loop has official implementation progress reported in 2026; the sources do not say that a hyperloop system is being built or operated.

When will Dubai Loop open?
The latest cited progress report, dated 29 September 2026, does not give a confirmed opening date. The RTA’s February announcement estimated around one year for the pilot after design completion and required preparations, and around three years for the full route, but those are anticipated project periods rather than a guarantee. Until the RTA publishes a firm operational date, Dubai Loop should be described as a project under development, not an available transport service.
