The Honda CR-V e:FCEV is an electric-drive SUV that can draw power from both hydrogen and a plug-in battery. That unusual setup gives it a limited battery-only range for short trips, but longer drives still depend on finding working hydrogen stations. Honda calls it a fuel-cell electric vehicle; “plug-in fuel-cell hybrid” is a plain-language description of how its two energy sources work, not Honda’s official vehicle category. Whether it makes sense depends less on the plug than on your routes and access to hydrogen.
What makes the CR-V e:FCEV a plug-in fuel-cell hybrid?
An electric motor drives the wheels. Electricity can come from a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, which combines compressed hydrogen with oxygen from the air, or from a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Plugging in charges the battery, and regenerative braking can replenish it while driving. The arrangement is unusual among SUVs: the plug-in battery supports short electric trips, while hydrogen supplies energy for longer driving.
For the 2025 model, Honda lists a 17.7-kWh battery, 4.3 kg hydrogen capacity, a 10,000-psi tank, 92.2 kW fuel-cell output, and an electric motor rated at 174 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. Honda’s powertrain explanation describes how the fuel cell and battery feed the electric drive motor; its 2025 specifications provide the listed component figures.
How far can it drive on electricity or hydrogen?
Honda lists 29 miles of EV-mode range and 270 miles of total driving range. The first figure is the battery-powered range; the second includes hydrogen. They are manufacturer-published ratings, not guarantees of real-world distance under every driving, weather, or charging condition. Honda says Level 2 charging takes about 2.5 hours to add roughly 29 miles, and says hydrogen refueling takes 3 to 5 minutes. Those times are Honda’s published estimates, not independent test results. The plug-in function can cover a short commute or errands if you recharge regularly, but it does not remove the need for hydrogen on longer trips. The relevant question is whether you can routinely reach a station that is open and operating, not simply whether the vehicle has a charging port.
Why do the 2025 and 2026 MPGe figures differ?
Honda publishes different fuel-economy figures for the two model years. Its 2025 specification page lists 94 city, 79 highway, and 87 combined MPGe. A Honda release dated December 2, 2025 lists 61 city, 52 highway, and 57 combined MPGe for the 2026 CR-V e:FCEV. The published materials cited here do not explain the difference, so the figures should not be combined or used to infer a cause.

Where can you lease and refuel one?
Honda describes 2026 U.S. availability as limited to select participating dealers in California, for lease only. Eligibility depends on proximity to approved hydrogen stations in its Northern and Southern California network. Check directly with a participating dealer for current availability and local lease terms; the restriction makes this a geographically narrow option, not a generally available CR-V.
Station status can change. The California Energy Commission’s hydrogen dashboard uses data as of March 31, 2026 and was updated June 10, 2026; it distinguishes open retail stations from planned and temporarily non-operational sites. The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership map displays operating categories such as online, limited, offline, recharging, and unknown. Neither a dashboard snapshot nor a station listing guarantees a usable pump when you arrive. Check the CEC hydrogen station dashboard and the Partnership’s station map for current information, and confirm stations on the routes you actually drive.

What does the 2026 CR-V e:FCEV cost?
Honda’s December 2, 2025 release lists a 2026 MSRP of $50,000 before destination and $51,450 with its stated $1,450 destination charge. These manufacturer list figures exclude taxes, license, registration, and options; Honda says dealer prices may vary. The vehicle is offered for lease only at select dealers, so the MSRP is not a lease payment. Ask a local participating dealer for current terms.
Honda’s consumer page advertises up to $15,000 in hydrogen fuel via a fuel card over the three-year lease. “Up to” is a maximum, not a guaranteed amount of fuel for every lessee; verify eligibility and current terms with the dealer. How does it compare with other hydrogen vehicles?
Honda identifies the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo as other hydrogen-powered vehicles in its comparison material. The practical distinction to investigate is that the CR-V e:FCEV can also take energy from a household charging setup, while a fuel-cell vehicle without plug-in capability cannot use that same battery-charging routine. That flexibility is bounded by the Honda’s 29-mile EV-mode range and California’s hydrogen network.
Honda also highlights cabin and cargo utility: its 2025 specifications list 25.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 61.0 cubic feet with the seats folded. Honda’s comparison page promotes the CR-V’s plug-in capability, EV range, and passenger/cargo space; promotional claims of superiority are Honda’s framing, not an independent comparison. Before choosing among hydrogen vehicles, compare usable station coverage on your routes, current lease terms and fuel support, electric-only range, and the cabin space you need. Who is this unusual CR-V for?
It is most plausible for a California driver who can lease through an eligible dealer, has dependable hydrogen stations near home, work, or routine routes, and can charge at home or elsewhere to make use of the short battery-only range. It is a poor fit if hydrogen access is uncertain, if you expect the plug to eliminate fueling logistics on long drives, or if lease-only availability does not suit you. The decision is not whether two energy sources sound clever; it is whether both systems fit your everyday routine.
