It later powered Saab 95 and 96 models, but “Ford V4” can also refer to Britain’s separate Essex engine. The two families should not be treated as the same design.
Where Ford’s Cologne V4 began
Ford’s Cologne engine plant started serial engine production on 1 June 1962. The first engine off the line was a 1.2-litre V4 rated at 40 PS, fitted to the Cologne-built Ford Taunus 12M, according to Ford’s 2022 account of the plant.
The engine is often connected to Ford’s Cardinal compact-car project. A history published by Sonett Club Sweden describes the Cardinal as a front-wheel-drive subcompact project that became the German Taunus after Ford redirected the car to West Germany. Ford’s retrospective confirms the Taunus application and production milestone, but does not recount that project history.
Cologne V4 and Essex V4 are different engines
“Ford V4” is not a precise name for one engine family. The German Cologne, also called Taunus, V4 is distinct from the British Essex V4. A 2006 history published by Sonett Club Sweden describes the Essex as “almost entirely different” from the Cologne unit. That distinction matters: the engines’ applications, specifications and histories should not be combined.

The available histories establish this separation but do not provide a complete, authoritative side-by-side account of both families’ dimensions, output ranges, production dates and vehicle applications. The milestones below concern the Cologne V4 unless stated otherwise.
How the V4 reached Saab
Saab introduced a Cologne-derived V4 in the 95 and 96 in August 1966, for the 1967 model year, according to the undated model histories at The Saab Museum’s 95 history and its 96 history. The pages report a Saab 1,498 cc version producing 65 hp at 4,700 rpm. That figure applies to the Saab specification reported there, not every Cologne V4 variant.

The Saab histories list V4 model years through 1978 for the 95 and 1980 for the 96. Those dates describe the models’ V4 histories as presented on those pages; they do not establish a single end date for every Cologne V4 application.
Saab’s requested engine changes
A 2006 Sonett Club Sweden article says Saab’s purchase arrangement was conditional on revisions requested by chief engineer Rolf Mellde. It names three areas: changing the block from open-deck to closed-deck construction, adding positive crankcase ventilation and improving carburetion to control emissions. These are details of the Saab development story as told by the club article, not evidence that every Taunus or Cologne V4 received the same changes.

The same article reports that Saab moved from the 1,498 cc engine to a 1,698 cc version for model year 1971. This is a Saab application milestone, rather than a universal displacement change across all Ford V4s.
Design and other applications
The Sonett Club history describes the Cologne V4 as a 60-degree design with a balance shaft intended to address imbalance. Ford’s own account confirms that the Cologne plant supplied engines to other manufacturers, including Saab and Matra. The club article further reports that Matra used the V4 in its mid-engined M530A, publicly introduced at the 1967 Geneva show.

The club history also says a 1,527 cc V4 powered the Mustang I prototype/show car, which appeared publicly at Watkins Glen in October 1962. This was not a production Mustang application. The article mentions other uses, including stationary power and Thiokol snowmobiles, but those details are not independently established by the other sources cited here.

The firmest starting point is Ford’s date and first-engine specification: 1 June 1962, 1.2 litres and 40 PS for the Taunus 12M. The Saab histories supply the 1966 introduction and reported 1,498 cc specification, while the Sonett Club article adds the account of Saab-requested revisions and selected applications. Together, these sources outline important milestones, not a complete production chronology or a definitive total-production figure.
