The GT is the lower-cost way into a V8 Mustang; the Dark Horse makes a stronger case if its extra hardware is worth the premium to you.
How much more does the Dark Horse cost?
Ford’s U.S. 2025 model page lists a starting MSRP of $46,560 for the Mustang GT Fastback and $64,380 for the Dark Horse, a difference of $17,820. These are Ford’s listed starting prices, not current dealer quotes or option-matched totals. They do not establish what either car will cost after options, taxes, regional pricing, discounts, or other transaction details. Ford’s 2025 Mustang page
| 2025 U.S. trim | Listed starting MSRP | Engine rating |
|---|---|---|
| Mustang GT Fastback | $46,560 | 5.0L Ti-VCT V8; 480 hp |
| Mustang Dark Horse | $64,380 | Modified 5.0L V8; 500 hp |
What does the Dark Horse add?
Ford rates the Dark Horse at 500 hp, compared with 480 hp for the GT: a 20-hp difference on the listed specifications. The Dark Horse also has performance equipment Ford identifies for the trim:
- TREMEC six-speed manual transmission with rev matching
- Standard MagneRide damping
- 3.73 TORSEN limited-slip rear axle
- Brembo brakes
Those features make the Dark Horse more than a small power bump on paper. Whether they translate into meaningful value for a particular driver depends on how much that driver wants this specific equipment; the specifications alone do not establish a performance result or prove that the Dark Horse is the better buy.

- Highly-detailed die-cast precision model
- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Opening doors, hood or trunk on most styles
Is the GT still the better value?
If your priority is a V8 Mustang at the lower listed starting price, the GT has the clearer value case: it starts $17,820 below the Dark Horse. That gap is substantial relative to the 20-hp difference, but horsepower alone does not capture the Dark Horse’s additional hardware.
Ford lists a GT Performance Package as available, so the base GT is not the only GT configuration relevant to a buyer comparing performance equipment. The available information does not provide a complete option-adjusted price comparison, however. It cannot establish how closely an equipped GT matches the Dark Horse’s equipment or what the price gap would be between comparable builds.

Which 2025 Mustang should you choose?
Choose the GT if
- You want a V8 Mustang while keeping the listed starting price lower.
- You do not place enough value on the Dark Horse’s specified hardware to justify its starting-price premium.
Consider the Dark Horse if
- You specifically want its TREMEC manual with rev matching, standard MagneRide damping, 3.73 TORSEN axle, and Brembo brakes.
- You are willing to pay more for that equipment and the additional 20 hp listed by Ford.
Before deciding, compare actual builds and current local pricing. Ford’s figures describe the U.S. 2025 model-year lineup; inventory, incentives, configurations, and transaction prices can vary or change.
