The Harley-Davidson Softail first reached production as the 1984 FXST. Its defining trick is that it has rear suspension, but hides it to preserve the clean, hardtail-like profile of older motorcycles. The idea began with independent design engineer Bill Davis; Harley-Davidson developed his concept into a production motorcycle and later redesigned the Softail chassis for 2018.
What is a Harley-Davidson Softail?
Softail is a Harley-Davidson motorcycle family built around a distinctive frame and rear-suspension layout. The rear wheel is not rigidly attached to the frame: a swingarm allows it to move, while suspension is tucked out of sight rather than displayed as a pair of exposed shocks.
That arrangement makes the Softail a styling solution as much as an engineering one. It gives the motorcycle a visually uncluttered rear end associated with older rigid-frame bikes, while retaining functional rear suspension. Harley-Davidson describes the concealed suspension and swingarm as preserving the classic “hard tail” lines. Harley-Davidson’s 40-year Softail history and the Harley-Davidson Museum’s Heritage Softail record explain the design in those terms.
Why does a Softail look like a hardtail?
A hardtail has no rear suspension; its rear wheel is fixed relative to the frame. The Softail borrows the hardtail’s appearance, not its mechanical arrangement. Concealing the suspension lets the frame’s lines remain visually simple, while the swingarm and suspension provide movement at the rear wheel.

That is the “mystery” behind the name and silhouette: the suspension is present, but not immediately obvious. Calling a production Softail a rigid-rear motorcycle would be inaccurate.
Who invented the Softail?
Harley-Davidson credits independent design engineer Bill Davis with the concept. The company says it acquired an early concept motorcycle from Davis in the early 1980s, then its engineers perfected the design for production. The result was the FXST Softail, introduced in 1984. Harley-Davidson’s account of the Softail’s history is the clearest company summary.

The National Motorcycle Museum offers additional detail in its history of the 1984 FXST Softail. It says Davis began developing concealed-suspension frames in the 1970s, later worked with Bill Francis through Road Worx, and that Harley-Davidson acquired the Sub Shock frame patent and a completed motorcycle before developing its production version. Those prototype and transaction details come from the museum’s secondary historical account; Harley-Davidson’s own shorter account confirms the acquisition of Davis’s concept motorcycle and the company’s production development, but does not establish every private-transaction detail.
When did Harley-Davidson introduce the Softail?
Harley-Davidson began production of the FXST Softail in 1984. The company archive describes that production as a milestone following Harley-Davidson’s 1981 buyback. The company’s archive history independently confirms the 1984 production date.

How does a Softail differ from a Dyna?
The simplest historical distinction in Harley-Davidson’s comparison is the rear suspension: Dyna models use traditional twin rear shocks, while Softails hide their rear suspension to maintain the hardtail-like look. Harley-Davidson’s comparison also explains the family transition: the company retired Dyna in 2017, then carried some Dyna model names and design elements into the 2018 Softail range.
| Feature | Softail | Dyna |
|---|---|---|
| Rear suspension in Harley-Davidson’s family-level comparison | Concealed rear suspension | Traditional twin rear shocks |
| Styling emphasis | Hardtail-like rear profile | Exposed twin-shock arrangement |
| Family status in this history | Redesigned for model year 2018; some Dyna names and design elements continued in the range | Family retired in 2017 |
These are family-level distinctions, not a guarantee that every Softail or Dyna model year has identical geometry, adjustment, or riding behavior. The relevant model year matters, particularly because Harley-Davidson introduced a substantially redesigned Softail chassis for 2018.

What changed with the 2018 Softail redesign?
For model year 2018, Harley-Davidson announced a new chassis with a hidden, adjustable rear monoshock. The redesign changed more than the appearance of the suspension: Harley-Davidson said revised frame and geometry were intended to improve ride quality, traction and control. Those are manufacturer claims from the launch, not independent comparative test results. The company described the development effort as “the most extensive research and development program in the company’s history,” in a statement attributed to Paul James, then manager of product portfolio. Harley-Davidson’s 2018 announcement and its frame details provide the company’s rationale.
The redesign matters when comparing generations or identifying parts and specifications: a Softail from before 2018 should not be assumed to share the newer chassis or suspension arrangement. For an individual motorcycle, consult specifications for its exact model year and variant.

What the Softail name does—and does not—tell you
- It does signal a visual approach: the rear is styled to recall a rigid-frame hardtail.
- It does not mean the rear end is rigid: a production Softail has rear suspension.
- It identifies a platform that evolved: the 2018 chassis marked a substantial redesign, so model year matters in technical comparisons.
- It does not establish performance by itself: Harley-Davidson’s ride and handling claims for the 2018 design are company statements, not independent test findings.
