Honda has indefinitely suspended its proposed Canadian EV investment, including plans for an electric-vehicle assembly plant and a battery plant in Alliston, Ontario. The company first postponed the project by about two years in May 2025, citing slower EV demand, then announced the indefinite suspension in May 2026 after reassessing its automobile electrification strategy. Honda says the decision does not affect employment or production at its existing Alliston facility.
Is Honda still building the $15-billion Ontario EV project?
Not for now. Honda’s May 14, 2026 statement describes the project as indefinitely suspended, following a reassessment of the company’s automobile electrification strategy. That is a change from the earlier, roughly two-year postponement announced in May 2025. Honda has not described the project as formally canceled, so “indefinitely suspended” is the most precise description of its current status.
What did the proposed investment include?
Honda’s April 25, 2024 announcement proposed an approximately CAD $15-billion Canadian EV value chain, including investment from joint-venture partners. The proposal included evaluating an EV assembly plant and a stand-alone battery plant in Alliston, Ontario; it was not a single plant already under construction or in operation. Honda said the proposed EV plant had the potential to create 1,000 incremental manufacturing jobs in Alliston. Those were potential future jobs, not jobs already created.
Ontario’s April 2024 announcement described the proposed investment as part of a broader EV supply chain and outlined federal and provincial incentive context. The existence of proposed or available support does not mean that the full amounts were paid.

How did the project move from postponement to suspension?
- April 25, 2024 — proposal: Honda announced plans for the approximately CAD $15-billion Canadian EV value chain, including the proposed Alliston facilities. Honda’s announcement set out the project’s initial scope.
- May 13, 2025 — postponement: Honda said it would delay the plan by about two years because of the slowdown in EV demand. It said it would announce specific resumption timing once finalized. Honda’s 2025 filing described the postponement.
- March 12, 2026 — strategy reassessment: Honda announced a reassessment of its automobile electrification strategy and the cancellation of three EV models planned for North America. This provides broader corporate context; Honda later connected the Canadian suspension to its reassessed objectives. Honda’s March announcement covers the strategy change.
- May 14, 2026 — indefinite suspension: Honda announced that it had indefinitely suspended the Canadian value-chain investment in light of the strategy reassessment, citing revised strategic objectives. The company’s statement gives the current status.
Will the decision affect jobs or production at Honda’s existing Alliston plant?
Honda says it will not. In its May 14, 2026 statement, the company said the decision “does not affect current employment or production levels at our existing manufacturing facility in Alliston, Ontario,” where operations continue to meet strong demand for Civic and CR-V models. This assurance applies to the existing facility and reflects Honda’s statement on that date; it does not turn the proposed plant’s potential 1,000 jobs into existing jobs.

Honda said the project had future funding commitments from federal and provincial governments, but that no funds had been transferred to Honda as a result of those commitments. That is the company’s statement about transfers; it does not establish the terms of every agreement, the governments’ full costs, or any repayment obligation.
