Genesis calls it the Crystal Sphere: a shift-by-wire control whose striking appearance also reflects the car’s state.
What is the GV60’s Crystal Sphere?
It is an electronic gear selector, not a conventional mechanical lever. With the vehicle’s electrical systems off, the cabin-facing control appears as a softly illuminated sphere. When the vehicle is powered on, the sphere turns—Genesis describes a 180-degree rotation—to expose the rotary gear shift dial used to select a gear. Genesis calls this shift-by-wire capability: the selector sends an electronic command rather than mechanically connecting a lever to the transmission.
The feature’s official name is “Crystal Sphere”; “futuristic spinning orb” describes its appearance, not a separate component. Genesis presents the sphere’s two visible states as a cue about whether the vehicle is on. That is the manufacturer’s design explanation, not an independent assessment of how easy or safe the control is to use.
What changes between the two states?

Genesis says the sphere cannot rotate into driving mode while the GV60 is charging. It therefore serves as a design feature and a visible status cue; it does not replace checking the instrument cluster or following the vehicle’s operating instructions.

How to use it safely
Instructions vary by model year and market. The following details are from the 2023 U.S. GV60 Owner’s Manual; consult the manual for your exact vehicle before operating the selector.
- Wait for READY. The U.S. manual says the sphere can switch to shift-dial mode only while the READY indicator is on in the instrument cluster.
- Press the brake. The manual instructs drivers to depress the brake pedal when rotating the shift dial to change gear or when selecting Park.
- Check around the vehicle before selecting Drive or Reverse. Genesis specifically warns drivers to look for people, especially children, near the vehicle.
- Secure the vehicle before leaving. Select Park, apply the parking brake, and press Start/Stop to turn the vehicle off. The manual warns that failing to follow these steps can allow unexpected vehicle movement.
What if the sphere or dial does not work normally?
Do not force the mechanism or assume every GV60 uses the same recovery procedure. In its English-language 2026 European manual, Genesis lists the message “Rotary gear shift dial blocked. Remove obstructions” and advises an authorized Genesis retailer to inspect specified shifting-system errors and other listed malfunctions. That manual also describes a way to expose the dial if the sphere does not reset normally, but procedures differ by market and model year. Follow the instructions for your vehicle and contact an authorized retailer for a listed system fault.

Why did Genesis put a sphere in the center console?
Genesis describes the feature as a way to combine a distinctive interior design with an electronic control. In its newsroom material, the sphere glows when the electrical systems are off and rotates to uncover the controller when the car is ready to drive. Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis brand Chief Brand Officer, described the interior this way: “From the ‘floating’ centre console to the Crystal Sphere, the interior design of all-new GV60 combines high technology with an iconic design. It represents the latest interpretation of the Genesis ‘Beauty of White Space’ philosophy that places the customer at the heart of the car, meeting their every need for comfort to communication,”
That statement is Genesis’s design rationale, not evidence of a measurable usability advantage. The GV60 first launched in September 2021 and was redesigned in January 2025, according to Genesis; reveal dates and specifications can vary by region. The Crystal Sphere is best understood as a functional shift-by-wire selector presented in an unusually theatrical way.
