Consumer Reports’ broader reliability findings put Subaru alongside other leading brands, while its guidance on established hybrids does not settle which of these two new-model-year SUVs will prove more durable.
What the reliability evidence can—and cannot—say
Consumer Reports bases its predicted reliability ratings on member reports of vehicle problems. Its broader findings say established hybrid versions from automakers with long experience building hybrids can be as reliable as, or more reliable than, their gas counterparts. CR also places Subaru among the leading brands in its broader reliability discussion. Those are useful context, not a model-specific verdict: brand rankings and general hybrid trends cannot establish that the Forester Hybrid outlasts the RAV4 Hybrid. The 2026 Forester Hybrid is the first hybrid version of the redesigned Forester generation, which CR identifies as beginning with the 2025 redesign. That leaves less hybrid-specific history on which to base a durability judgment than the nameplate’s reputation alone might suggest. CR’s comparison page lists both 2026 SUVs, but the detailed comparative results are partly gated; the available information does not show a full independent head-to-head reliability result. A separate data point offers category-level context, not a winner: J.D. Power reported an average of 199 problems per 100 vehicles for hybrids in its 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, the fewest among the powertrain types in that edition. Fuel economy: keep test results separate from estimates
The available figures use different sources and configurations. Consumer Reports measured the Forester Hybrid at 34 mpg overall in its test. Subaru advertises up to 35 mpg and up to 581 miles of range, and says the hybrid can deliver up to 40 percent better city fuel economy than conventional models; those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Toyota estimates up to 41 mpg combined for the front-wheel-drive 2026 RAV4 Hybrid. Separately, CR reports 40 mpg overall in its test of an all-wheel-drive RAV4 Hybrid. The Toyota figure is a manufacturer estimate for a specified drivetrain; CR’s figure is a measured test result for a different configuration. Neither pair of numbers is a like-for-like comparison. The figures provide useful orientation, but they do not prove which SUV will use less fuel for a particular driver. Compare the EPA estimate for the exact trim and drivetrain you plan to buy, and account for driving conditions; do not treat a manufacturer maximum and an independent test result as equivalent.
How to compare them before buying
- Look for evidence tied to the exact model and powertrain. A brand-level reliability standing or hybrid-category average is not a substitute for owner-problem data on the particular SUV and hybrid system.
- Give history depth its due. The Forester Hybrid’s short model-specific track record makes a confident long-term comparison premature. Avoid reading the conventional Forester’s history as proof about this hybrid configuration.
- Match drivetrain and trim. Fuel economy depends on configuration, and the cited figures include both FWD and AWD vehicles. Compare the versions you would actually consider.
- Check practical fit in person. CR describes the Forester Hybrid as retaining the Forester’s comfortable ride, visibility and rear-seat room. Assess cargo space, seating, and the capability you need on the exact trims rather than assuming the SUVs are interchangeable.
- Separate regular hybrids from plug-in hybrids. Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 lineup includes both hybrid and plug-in hybrid choices. A plug-in hybrid is a distinct option whose benefits depend in part on access to charging; do not fold it into a regular-hybrid comparison.
- Compare current local prices and equipment. Trim features, options, transaction prices, incentives and availability vary, so use current local listings and the manufacturers’ equipment details rather than relying on a broad model-level price comparison.
Who should consider the Forester Hybrid?
The Forester Hybrid is worth considering if you want the Forester’s visibility, ride comfort and rear-seat practicality with a hybrid powertrain. Its CR test result and Subaru’s advertised figures make it a fuel-economy alternative to evaluate, but neither establishes a reliability advantage over Toyota. If proven model-specific history is your deciding factor, the evidence cited here does not justify declaring either SUV the reliability winner.
