Ford dates the ST nameplate to 2002. Its story makes most sense alongside the wider hot-hatch tradition—not as a single, uniform specification ladder, but as a model that changed with generation, body style and market.
What makes a hot hatch?
A hot hatch pairs the useful shape of a compact hatchback with performance-oriented power and chassis tuning. It is meant to handle ordinary duties while offering a more engaging drive than a standard family car. Volkswagen Australia describes the Golf GTI’s appeal as a blend of weekend sports-car character and weekday work-car usefulness—a concise expression of the idea.
The category is about that balance, not one mandatory engine, body configuration or equipment list. Focus ST versions have included different powertrains and, in some markets, more than one body style.
The Golf GTI established an early reference point
Volkswagen traces the Golf GTI to a small group inside the company that began developing a sporty Golf concept in 1974. The car made its world premiere in 1975 and launched in Germany in June 1976. Volkswagen says the initial plan was to build 5,000 examples of the special model; the GTI went on to become a lasting model line.

Its original details included a red grille edge, tartan sports seats, black wheel-arch extensions and a golf-ball-style gear knob. The GTI is useful context for the practical-performance formula that later hot hatches, including the Focus ST, would also embody. That is a category connection, not evidence of a direct engineering lineage between the two cars.
Ford dates the Focus ST to 2002
Ford identifies 2002 as the start of the Focus ST nameplate. In a 2014 release, Ford Motor Norge AS reported that more than 140,000 Focus STs had been sold in 40 countries since its introduction. That is a historical cumulative figure reported in 2014, not a current sales or production total.

The same Norwegian-market release illustrates why the ST’s history cannot be reduced to one global specification. Ford offered that model as either a five-door hatchback or an estate, with petrol and diesel engine variants. Those choices reflect market-specific versions rather than a universal recipe for every Focus ST.
The 2019 Focus ST broadened the performance brief
In February 2019, Ford announced what it called the fourth-generation Focus ST, developed by Ford Performance. Ford presented it as a family car with performance intent for both track days and B-roads, and described petrol EcoBoost and diesel EcoBlue powertrains.

The announcement marks a point in the model’s development; it does not establish whether a Focus ST is currently produced or available to order in any particular country. It does show how Ford continued to frame the ST around two uses: everyday practicality and more focused driving.
The 2024 European-market ST Edition added specialist hardware
Ford announced the Focus ST Edition on April 10, 2024, describing it in promotional language as its “most complete Ford Performance-developed Focus yet.” The claim belongs to Ford; it is not an independent comparison. This was a specific European-market special edition, not a specification that applies to every Focus ST.

Ford listed the five-door hatchback with a six-speed manual and a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine producing 280 PS and 420 Nm. Its stated figures were 0–62 mph in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Equipment included adjustable Ford Performance suspension, Brembo front brakes and 19-inch lightweight wheels. The combination of adjustable suspension and performance hardware points to the Edition’s enthusiast focus, while its five-door body retains the practical format associated with hot hatches.

The through-line is not a single engine or body style. It is the effort to make a compact, usable car more rewarding to drive. The 2014 Norwegian example shows how that effort could take different forms across markets; Ford’s 2019 announcement and 2024 European ST Edition show later emphasis on Ford Performance development and more specialized chassis equipment.
