The original first-model 1908 Harley-Davidson “Strap Tank” was the third headline contender. The result answered who won this particular showdown, but a later reported auction sale means the Cyclone’s result should not be described as the current all-time motorcycle auction record.
What was the February 1 motorcycle auction contest?
It was a contest in the sense of three high-profile motorcycles expected to cross the block close together—not a separate competition with a formal prize. New Atlas’s December 23, 2024 preview cast the 1915 Cyclone V-Twin, the original first-model 1908 Harley-Davidson “Strap Tank,” and a 1938 Crocker V-Twin as contenders for the first US$1 million motorcycle auction sale. Mecum’s official event listing identifies Las Vegas Motorcycles 2025 as running January 29 through February 1, with February 1 as a sale day.
The preview’s framing was a forecast, not a guarantee that all three motorcycles would reach the threshold. After the auction, New Atlas reported the Cyclone and Crocker results; the available reporting does not establish a sale result for the Strap Tank.
Which motorcycle sold for the most?
New Atlas reported that Mecum sold the Cyclone for US$1,320,000 on February 1, 2025. It reported that the Crocker sold for US$880,000 shortly afterward. On those reported results, the Cyclone won the three-bike contest by US$440,000 over the Crocker.

The original lot-level Mecum results for these three motorcycles were not available in the source material for this account, so the transaction amounts here are attributed to New Atlas rather than presented as independently verified auction records. No result for the Harley-Davidson Strap Tank is established in that reporting.
| Motorcycle | Reported outcome | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1915 Cyclone V-Twin | US$1,320,000 | New Atlas reported a Mecum sale on February 1, 2025. |
| 1938 Crocker V-Twin | US$880,000 | New Atlas reported a sale shortly after the Cyclone. |
| 1908 Harley-Davidson “Strap Tank” | Not stated | The preview named it as a contender; the available post-sale report does not establish its result. |
Why were these three motorcycles contenders?
1915 Cyclone V-Twin: rarity and racing-era engineering
The Cyclone’s standout story was its association with board-track racing and a bevel-driven overhead-cam V-twin. New Atlas’s preview treated its rarity and previous high auction prices as reasons it looked like the strongest contender. That was the outlet’s assessment of the likely market, not a verified independent ranking of collector demand.

1908 Harley-Davidson “Strap Tank”: an early model with an authenticity question
The Strap Tank was presented as the earliest Harley-Davidson model, giving it a powerful place in the brand’s history. But age and name recognition do not settle value on their own: the preview specifically identified the authenticity of surviving components as a relevant question. The available result reporting does not say how this example sold or whether it reached the million-dollar mark.
1938 Crocker V-Twin: prewar performance and scarcity
The Crocker brought a different appeal: a prewar road motorcycle with a performance reputation and limited production. New Atlas’s preview also discussed a claimed historic race guarantee, but the available source does not identify an official document or a named speaker supporting that claim. It is therefore best treated as a claim reported in the preview, not an established fact about the motorcycle’s history.

How to compare the three beyond the sale price
A headline price is only one measure of a collectible motorcycle’s significance. The preview points to several useful distinctions, while the available reporting leaves important lot-specific details unresolved.
- Provenance and rarity: A model’s scarcity matters, but the individual machine’s documented ownership and history also matter. The preview emphasized rarity, especially for the Cyclone and Crocker, without supplying a complete provenance comparison for all three lots.
- Originality and condition: The Strap Tank preview raised the authenticity of surviving components as a question. The available results do not provide a full, consistent condition or originality assessment across the three motorcycles.
- Engineering and competition history: The Cyclone’s overhead-cam configuration and board-track association, and the Crocker’s performance story, offer different historical draws. These qualities help explain the contest’s appeal; they do not by themselves prove why bidders set a particular price.
- Road use versus collectability: A motorcycle’s usability may matter to some buyers, but the reporting does not establish a comparable roadworthiness assessment for these lots. Their auction results should not be read as a guide to the cost or practicality of owning and riding them.
- Strength of the evidence: The reported Cyclone and Crocker prices are useful for understanding the outcome, but they are New Atlas’s account rather than verified here against the original lot records. The Harley result remains unstated in the available post-sale account.
Did the Cyclone remain the most expensive motorcycle sold at auction?
Not on the later reported figures available as of October 8, 2026. New Atlas reported that a 1965 MV Agusta 500 Grand Prix machine sold at Bonhams for US$1,304,773 on April 25, 2026. That is below the Cyclone’s reported US$1,320,000 sale, but comparisons of auction records can vary by currency and by how results are reported. The available account does not include the original Bonhams result, so it does not support a definitive, independently verified global record claim.

- Rotating rubber tires, Working kick stand, Adjustable handle bars and front wheel
- Made of die-cast metal with plastic parts
- 1:18 scale; Perfect addition to your diecast collection
- Not for children under 13 years old; Great for collecting
The careful distinction is that the Cyclone was the highest-priced of the February 1, 2025 three-bike contest on the reported results, and New Atlas described it as the first million-dollar motorcycle sale. That is narrower than saying it remains the highest-priced motorcycle ever sold at auction.
