In Ars Technica’s first-drive account, Jonathan Gitlin found it quick and composed, but its muted steering and obvious mass kept it from feeling like a sports SUV on a winding road. Acura’s range and charging figures are useful planning references, not guarantees of real-world results.
Why the ZDX Type S feels polished but heavy
The Type S is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive electric SUV rated by Acura at 499 hp and 544 lb-ft of torque. Its official curb weight is 6,052 pounds—nearly three tons. Those figures help explain the contrast in Gitlin’s May 2024 first drive: the ZDX felt lively, quiet and composed, yet its mass was hard to ignore when the road demanded a quick change of direction.
Gitlin described it this way: “But the steering lacks feel and makes up for it with weight, and maneuvers like avoiding road debris on the highway will give you a definite reminder that you’re driving nearly 3 tons of vehicle.” That is a reviewer’s driving impression, not a measured handling result. The Type S has adaptive air suspension and front six-piston Brembo brakes as standard equipment, but those features do not make the vehicle feel light. Ars Technica’s 2024 first-drive review and Acura’s 2024 specifications provide the driving impressions and published equipment figures.
What the drive was like
Gitlin found the Type S peppy in Normal and quick in Sport, while noting that Acura had not published acceleration times in the review’s context. Sport changes ride height and damping behavior. The review’s overall impression was comfort-first: the seats were comfortable, visibility was good, the air-suspension ride was smooth, and the cabin was mostly quiet. The steering, by contrast, felt short on feedback.

These are Acura’s published 2024 model-year figures, not independently measured results. Acura says actual range varies with factors including temperature, terrain, battery age and condition, vehicle loading, use and maintenance. How much range does the ZDX Type S have, and how long does it take to charge?
Acura lists a 278-mile EPA range for the 2024 Type S. Its charging estimates are 42 minutes to go from 20% to 80% state of charge on DC fast charging, or up to 72 miles of range added in 10 minutes. On a 240-volt Level 2 connection, Acura lists 29.4 miles of range per hour when using a professionally installed, dedicated 60-amp charging station, sold separately.

These are manufacturer figures rather than a promise for every trip or charger. Actual range and charging time vary with conditions, including temperature, battery condition, charger output and vehicle settings. For home charging, confirm electrical-service capacity, circuit and equipment compatibility, installation requirements, and current vehicle guidance with a qualified electrician and Acura before choosing a station.
The 2024 review describes the vehicle as using a CCS1 charging port and discusses access to EVgo and Electrify America, as well as adapters for Tesla Supercharger access. It mentioned IONNA as a future network at the time. That account is dated: adapter availability and network compatibility can change, so check current Acura guidance and the network’s own information before relying on a particular charger.

Cabin technology and driver assistance
Acura lists Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 11.3-inch touchscreen, an 11-inch instrument cluster, a head-up display and an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system for the 2024 Type S. Gitlin described the infotainment as Android Automotive OS with an Acura interface, while noting that CarPlay remains available.
Hands Free Cruise is a Type S feature. Gitlin’s 2024 review described it as GM Super Cruise with Acura branding, using a driver-facing gaze camera and mapped highway coverage in the U.S. and Canada. Acura says use requires an active plan or trial; the feature should not be treated as unconditionally free. The review’s description of coverage and the connected-service terms is specific to its 2024 context, not a statement of current network coverage or subscription terms.

What used-car shoppers should check
NHTSA recall notices dated March 3 and May 20, 2026, identify campaigns that include certain 2024 Acura ZDX vehicles. The March notice, campaign 26V112, concerns possible instrument-panel display failure or a blank rearview-camera image associated with software errors. The May notice, campaign 26V306, concerns a distorted or blank rearview-camera image and describes dealer camera replacement as the remedy. Neither notice establishes whether a particular ZDX is affected or whether its repair has been completed.
- Check the specific vehicle identification number for open recalls using NHTSA’s vehicle lookup or an Acura dealer.
- Ask for documentation showing whether applicable recall repairs were completed.
The notices are available from NHTSA, campaign 26V112 and NHTSA, campaign 26V306. A recall notice alone does not establish a specific vehicle’s status.
What the Type S cost when reviewed
Ars Technica listed the Type S at $73,500 in its 2024 first-drive coverage. That is dated review context, not a current transaction price or used-market valuation.
For a comparison with another premium electric SUV, use like-for-like evidence: EPA range and charging capability, access to chargers on the routes you drive, documented power and acceleration figures, curb weight and steering character, passenger and cargo space, driver-assistance equipment and any plan requirements, and the individual vehicle’s recall and repair history. The figures and first-drive impressions here do not establish a class winner.
