By reported period 0–60 mph times, the quickest muscle-car candidate in this sourced group is the 1964 Pontiac Tempest GTO, at 4.6 seconds. Car and Driver’s retrospective lists eight candidates from original magazine tests; it does not establish a defensible decade-wide top ten. The ranking below preserves that limit rather than filling two slots with unverified cars. “Fastest” here means quicker 0–60 mph acceleration—not quarter-mile time, trap speed, or maximum velocity.
Ranked by reported 0–60 mph time
These are period magazine test results as summarized by Car and Driver in its June 22, 2015 retrospective, which identifies the original test issue dates. The results were not measured in a controlled, back-to-back comparison, and ties remain ties.
-
1964 Pontiac Tempest GTO — 4.6 seconds
Original test: March 1964. This is the quickest 0–60 result among the muscle-car candidates in the retrospective.
-
1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427 — 4.7 seconds
Original test: May 1967. The Corvette is included in the source’s candidate list, though whether it belongs in a muscle-car ranking depends on how the category is defined.

The source’s broader “quickest cars” list also names a 1963 Shelby Cobra 260 at 4.5 seconds and a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 in its historical table. A Cobra is not automatically a muscle car, so neither is added here. A 1964 Porsche 904 in the broader list is a sports car, not a muscle-car entry.

Why this is not a complete top ten
The cited retrospective supports eight muscle-car candidates under a broad definition that includes the Corvette and Mustang, but it does not supply two more verified entries to complete a top ten. A stricter category boundary could also exclude some of those candidates. Adding cars from a different list or metric would make the ranking look complete without making it comparable or adequately sourced.
0–60 time is not the same as drag-strip performance
Quarter-mile elapsed time and trap speed measure different parts of performance, so they can change the order. Car and Driver’s historical test table reports these quarter-mile examples:

| 1964 Pontiac Tempest GTO | 13.1 seconds | 115 mph |
| 1969 Plymouth Road Runner | 13.5 seconds | 105 mph |
| 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 | 13.8 seconds | 107 mph |
| 1966 Plymouth Satellite 426 Hemi | 13.8 seconds | 104 mph |
These are separate historical results, not additional inputs to the 0–60 ranking. The Cobra’s inclusion in a muscle-car comparison is debatable; the table is useful for showing why a ranking based on another metric would differ.

Car and Driver cautions that 1960s testing procedures were less rigorous than current ones. It also reports that manufacturers sometimes supplied unusually quick “ringers” and often understated engine output; individual cars could vary substantially from the factory floor. Treat these times as published results from particular tests, not precise modern standards for every stock example.

The retrospective excludes a 1965 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 that recorded 3.9 seconds to 60 because it had been “properly set up” by tuner Royal Pontiac. That result illustrates why a striking number alone does not make a fair showroom-car comparison.
