Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no single best used car for every older driver or budget. Start with a safety-screened shortlist, then choose the exact vehicle that fits the driver’s mobility, visibility, control reach, passenger and cargo needs—and its condition and total cost. Age alone does not determine driving ability or which car will work best.
Which used cars are worth starting with?
The IIHS and Consumer Reports used-car recommendations, updated May 27, 2026, are a useful safety-filtered candidate pool. The list is aimed at teen drivers, but IIHS says it is suitable for drivers of any age. It is not a seniors-specific ranking: it does not establish that a model is easy for a particular person to enter, comfortable to drive, or in good condition as a used vehicle.

| Candidate | Applicable model years and build-date note | Published median retail price |
|---|---|---|
| Mazda CX-5 | 2018–25; built after March 2018 | $13,100 |
| Mazda 3 sedan | 2020–25 | $13,200 |
| Subaru Forester | 2019–25 | $15,900 |
| Toyota Camry, including hybrid | 2019–25 | $17,300 |
| Subaru Legacy | 2020–25 | $16,500 |
| Mazda CX-30 | 2021–25; built after September 2020 | $15,900 |
These are leads, not a ranking of what to buy. The recommendations combine crashworthiness, braking and handling, control and display usability, and— for “Best Choices”—specified automatic emergency braking and headlight performance. Check the IIHS ratings and NHTSA ratings for the exact model year; equipment and results can differ by year and trim. For a build-date exception, verify the vehicle’s door-jamb certification label.

How to tell whether a car fits its driver
The easiest car to get into is the one the intended driver can enter and leave steadily, sit in comfortably, and operate without strain. Body style alone cannot answer that. An SUV may offer a useful seat height to one person but require an awkward step for another; a sedan may be easier for a driver who prefers a lower seat. Test the actual car rather than choosing from its category.
- Entry and exit: Check whether the driver can sit down and stand up without pulling hard on the steering wheel or door. Try the passenger side too if it will be used regularly.
- Seat and restraint: Confirm a useful range of seat height and fore-aft adjustment, a comfortable backrest, and a seat belt that lies correctly. A cushion should not compromise restraint fit or make controls harder to reach.
- Reach and effort: With the driver seated, check that the steering wheel, pedals, gear selector and frequently used controls are comfortably reachable. Note steering effort and whether any movements cause pain or fatigue.
- Visibility: Check the windshield view, blind spots, mirrors and rear view from the normal driving position. Make sure head restraints or pillars do not block important sight lines.
- Readability and operation: See whether labels, displays and controls are legible and intuitive for that driver, including in daylight and at night.
- Realistic drive: Take a route that includes ordinary turns, parking, braking and the speeds the driver normally uses. A brief seat check cannot reveal every comfort or visibility issue.
Base the choice on the driver’s actual mobility, vision, strength and preferences, not assumptions about older people as a group. NHTSA’s guidance is explicit: “Decisions about your ability to drive should never be based on age alone.” If adaptive controls may be needed, consult a driver rehabilitation specialist before buying the vehicle or equipment.

Which safety features and ratings matter?
First check the exact year’s crash-test ratings and the equipment installed on the specific car. A model name or a feature advertised for a newer version does not prove that a used example has it. IIHS identifies these items as relevant when assessing a vehicle:
- Electronic stability control and head-protecting side airbags.
- Front crash prevention, blind-spot detection and lane-departure warning.
- A rearview camera or parking sensors, where fitted.
- Headlight performance, which can vary by trim and equipment.
The evidence supports paying attention to protective equipment without treating it as a personal guarantee. IIHS summarizes a 2013 estimate by Kahane that side airbags providing head and torso protection were associated with a 45% estimated reduction in nearside-impact fatalities for front-seat occupants age 70 and older; the corresponding estimate for ages 13–49 was 30%. A separate Florida analysis of 2014–2018 crash records found higher adjusted fatality odds among crash-involved drivers 70 and older when electronic stability control was not standard (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.12–1.68); in driver-side crashes, odds were higher without standard head-protecting side airbags (OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.58–2.62). That 2022 study was observational and specific to its data and model, so its odds ratios are not an individual’s absolute risk.

IIHS also reports a 2023 estimate by Cox and colleagues that a combination of front crash prevention, blind-spot detection and lane-departure warning might be relevant to 18% of older drivers’ annual crash involvements, 18% of their injuries and 25% of their fatalities. This estimates potential relevance; it is not a measured reduction in all crashes or a promise that those systems prevent a particular crash.
How to compare SUVs, sedans and total costs
Choose a body style for the driver’s fit and the household’s actual needs. Compare safe entry and exit, outward visibility, parking ease, passenger space and cargo capacity in the specific cars. Do not assume an SUV is automatically safer or easier; there is no universal body-style winner for every driver.

In a survey reported in a 2022 Journal of Safety Research abstract hosted by IIHS, 58% of drivers ages 70–79 and 63% of drivers 80 and older said they kept a vehicle an average of at least seven years before replacement, compared with 32% of drivers ages 35–54. The same survey found 10% of respondents 80 and older and 9% ages 70–79 said safety ratings were not at all important, compared with 4% ages 35–54. How to check a used car before buying it
- Define needs and budget. Write down typical trip length, passengers, cargo, parking and climate needs, as well as any mobility or vision considerations. Include operating expenses, not just the purchase-price limit.
- Shortlist exact vehicles. Use the IIHS/Consumer Reports recommendations as a starting filter. Check the exact model year and trim in the IIHS ratings and NHTSA ratings databases, then verify listed build-date requirements on the certification label.
- Have the intended driver test the car. Check entry, exit, seating, restraint fit, sight lines, display legibility, steering-wheel and pedal reach, steering effort and comfort on a realistic drive. If adaptive controls are needed or anticipated, consult a driver rehabilitation specialist first.
- Get the terms in writing. Request an itemized out-the-door quote. Read the FTC’s dealer used-car buying guidance, including the Buyers Guide, warranty, add-ons and return policy; do not rely on verbal promises. The FTC says federal law does not give all dealer buyers a three-day cancellation period. State rules and dealer policies differ.
- Review the vehicle’s history and condition separately. Get a vehicle history report, then hire an independent mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection and written repair estimate. A history report may disclose some past events but cannot substitute for a mechanical inspection or guarantee that mechanical faults will be found.
- Check recalls by VIN or plate. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup and ask the seller or manufacturer to confirm that needed repairs were completed. NHTSA says the lookup may not yet show some recently announced recalls until all affected VINs are identified; it may also omit recalls more than 15 years old in many cases and recalls already repaired.
- Compare the full picture. Weigh documented condition, ratings, installed equipment and likely ownership costs against alternatives. Walk away or renegotiate if the inspection, title or history, warranty terms or seller’s answers do not support the asking price.
The FTC says dealers must display a Buyers Guide on each used car offered for sale and provide it to buyers after sale, with separate form rules described for Maine and Wisconsin. Read the guide on the actual vehicle and keep a copy of the agreed terms.
When adaptive equipment may be part of the budget
Some fit problems can be addressed with adjustments or adaptive equipment, but the right solution depends on the individual and vehicle. NHTSA’s older-driver brochure gives historical examples—not current quotes—of a special seat-back cushion “for as little as $50,” hand controls “for under $1,000,” and a new vehicle modified with adaptive equipment costing “anywhere from $20,000 to $80,000.” Prices, equipment needs and installation costs vary; get specialist advice and current quotes before budgeting or modifying a car.
A cushion may help some drivers achieve a better view, but it is not a universal fix. Confirm that seating remains stable, the seat belt fits correctly and pedals and other controls remain safely reachable.
