Can the F-22 carry external fuel tanks and stay stealthy?
It can carry external tanks, but carrying them does not preserve the aircraft’s full low-observable advantage. External tanks and their pylons increase the aircraft’s radar visibility; the F-22’s established external tanks are used to extend ferry range, rather than representing a stealth-preserving combat configuration. The U.S. Air Force lists the aircraft’s fuel and ferry-range figures on its F-22 fact sheet.
What is the Low Drag Tank and Pylon system?
The Low Drag Tank and Pylon system, or LDTP, is a reported effort to develop external tanks and attachment hardware that reduce the stealth and performance penalties of conventional external carriage. Air & Space Forces Magazine reported that Air Force budget documents describe the system as supporting longer-range missions while preserving lethality and survivability. The intended improvements should not be mistaken for published test results.
Supersonic carriage
Reporting on budget documents describes a design goal of allowing the F-22 to fly supersonically with tanks and pylons, with a stated limit of up to Mach 1.2. That is a reported specification for the planned system, not evidence that the aircraft can sustain that speed in every condition or that the capability is operational.

A smoother surface after release
Air & Space Forces Magazine also describes “smart rack pneumatic technology” intended to let the tanks be jettisoned while leaving a smoother surface than legacy attachment points. The aim is to reduce the stealth penalty after the tanks are gone; public reporting does not establish a measured radar-signature improvement.

What the Air Force’s published figures say
The U.S. Air Force fact sheet lists 18,000 pounds of internal fuel capacity and 26,000 pounds with two external wing tanks. It gives a ferry range of more than 1,850 miles (1,600 nautical miles) with those two tanks. These are baseline figures for the established aircraft configuration, not a stated range for LDTP.

Air & Space Forces Magazine reported that the Air Force’s fiscal 2024–2028 spending plan included $553 million for stealthy long-range fuel tanks and pylons. That is a plan figure, not confirmation of final expenditure or proof that the system entered service.

Public reporting has described flight-test imagery and a budget-plan line, but those do not by themselves establish an operational capability. The sources do not publish a measured radar-cross-section reduction or a new-system range figure. Photographs cannot establish either value, and “stealthy” describes the design intent rather than invisibility or guaranteed undetectability.

Air Combat Command’s spokesperson cautioned that official artwork was illustrative: “This illustration is simply an artist rendering of an F-22 aircraft with any number of future capabilities.” The spokesperson also said, “We need every combat platform to go farther, sense farther, and shoot farther.” Lockheed Martin F-22 vice president Kevin “Red” Smith described the updated hardware as “advanced technological designs providing increased performance, persistence, and range while maintaining lethality and survivability.” Those statements explain the program’s stated ambition, but do not substitute for public performance data.
