No traditional dual-sport in the available model information is proven to make long highway rides comfortable for every rider. If paved miles matter most, the 2025 Suzuki V-Strom 650XT Adventure has the clearest road-touring equipment in this group; if you need a lighter, more trail-oriented motorcycle, compare the Honda CRF300L, Suzuki DR650S and Honda XR650L with a test ride at your real cruising speed. The right choice depends on your fit, highway use and the dirt you intend to ride.
What makes a dual-sport work on the highway?
“Dual-sport” describes a broad compromise between road legality and off-pavement ability; it is not a promise of wind protection, a relaxed seat or comfortable hours at highway speed. The manufacturer pages below provide specifications and descriptions, not a controlled comparison of highway comfort. An individual Reddit commenter put the concern bluntly: “4 hours on a dual sport at highway speeds is my idea of hell.” That is one rider’s opinion, not a universal limit or a measured finding.
To compare candidates, look beyond displacement. Consider wind protection, seat shape and fit, transmission, fuel capacity, riding position, and the roughness of the off-road terrain you need to handle. A larger single-cylinder engine or a larger fuel tank, on its own, does not establish highway smoothness or real-world range.
2025 dual-sport and adventure-bike options
| Model | Published details | What the details mean for highway use |
|---|---|---|
| Honda CRF300L | 311 lb curb weight, 34.7-inch seat height, 2.1-gallon fuel capacity, six-speed transmission and standard switchable ABS. Honda specifications. | Its published specifications describe a relatively light, trail-oriented option. They do not establish range or comfort at highway speeds. |
| Suzuki DR650S | 644cc single, five-speed transmission, 3.4-gallon tank (3.2 gallons for the California version), 366 lb curb weight and 34.8-inch seat height. Suzuki lists an optional seat-height reduction of 1.6 inches. Suzuki specifications and features. | Suzuki describes the model for highway use and highlights its long seat, but the cited material does not establish wind protection or comparative comfort. |
| Honda XR650L | 644cc single, 346 lb curb weight, 37.0-inch seat height and 2.8-gallon fuel capacity. Honda calls it street legal and passenger ready. Honda specifications and features. | The taller published seat height makes fit an especially important consideration. The available specifications do not prove highway comfort. |
| Suzuki V-Strom 650XT Adventure | 645cc V-twin, six-speed transmission, 5.3-gallon tank, adjustable windscreen, side cases, and low- and high-profile seat options. Suzuki model features. | Of these models, it has the clearest documented road-touring equipment. It is an adventure-touring alternative, so consider whether it suits the technical difficulty of your off-road riding. |
| Kawasaki KLR650 Adventure ABS | A Kawasaki search-result listing reports a 34.3-inch seat height. The model page could not be opened for further specifications. Kawasaki listing. | That single published dimension is not enough for a meaningful highway-comfort or full-spec comparison. |
Which direction fits your riding?
Choose a traditional dual-sport when trail ability comes first
The CRF300L, DR650S and XR650L are candidates to investigate if you want a street-legal motorcycle with trail-oriented specifications. Their listed weight, engine, tank and seat-height figures help narrow a shortlist, but none predicts how comfortable you will feel at your local highway speed. The XR650L’s 37.0-inch seat height is a notable fit check; the DR650S has a manufacturer-listed seat-lowering option.

Consider an adventure motorcycle when paved mileage dominates
If your off-road riding is mostly graded roads or less technical trails, widen the search to adventure motorcycles. Suzuki describes the V-Strom 650XT Adventure for high-mile use and lists an adjustable windscreen, six-speed transmission, 5.3-gallon tank and side cases. Suzuki’s product page says, “The six-speed transmission suits sporty rides with tight first through fifth gear ratios and a tall top gear (sixth gear) for highway cruising.” That is manufacturer language about the transmission, not independent proof that the bike will feel comfortable to you.
Its touring equipment makes the V-Strom the most road-oriented option documented here, but its suitability depends on your fit and how much off-road capability you need. A traditional dual-sport may be a better match for more demanding dirt riding.

How to test a bike for your highway miles
Arrange a test ride that includes the speeds and duration you actually expect to ride. A brief low-speed loop may reveal fit and controls, but it cannot settle how the bike feels over an extended highway stint.
- Check wind pressure and buffeting. Ride at your usual cruising speed and note airflow around your helmet and torso. If the motorcycle has an adjustable screen, try its available positions.
- Assess seat pressure and posture. Pay attention to pressure points, knee bend, reach to the controls and whether your posture remains natural after more than a short loop.
- Notice vibration and engine reserve. At local highway speeds, assess how the engine feels and whether the response available for passing suits your riding. Do not assume engine size alone predicts smoothness.
- Plan fuel stops from realistic economy data. Tank capacity is not a range figure. Use fuel-consumption information that applies to the model and your riding conditions before planning stop intervals.
- Check loaded fit and low-speed handling. If you will carry luggage or a passenger, assess seat reach and maneuvering with a realistic load where possible. A published seat height alone does not settle reach or confidence.
- Match the bike to your dirt routes. Decide whether your regular riding includes graded roads or more technical terrain, then weigh that need against the road equipment and fit you want.
What the published specifications cannot tell you
The listed weights, seat heights, transmissions and tank capacities are model specifications, not highway-performance results. No comparative comfort score, universal maximum ride duration, or sourced fuel-economy figure is established for these options here. In particular, tank capacity should not be converted into a promised riding range, and manufacturer comfort descriptions should be read as claims about the named feature rather than as independent assessments of the whole motorcycle. Honda, for example, says of the XR650L rear suspension: “Our Pro-Link® rear suspension is designed to offer a comfortable yet controlled ride.” That statement concerns the suspension, not hours of highway touring.
