The Cadillac Castilian was a Fleetwood Sixty Special Brougham transformed into a long-roof luxury wagon by Traditional Coach Works—not a regular-production Cadillac station wagon. Its bespoke fiberglass roof and fastback-style liftgate made it an unusual blend of Cadillac scale and coachbuilt bodywork. How many were made is disputed: one account reports 11 conversions in 1976, while another says 11 were built “by most accounts” and separately estimates another 40 in 1975.
What was the Cadillac Castilian?
Traditional Coach Works, based in Chatsworth in the Los Angeles area, converted Fleetwood Sixty Special Brougham sedans into Castilian wagons. The distinctive long-roof body came from the coachbuilder, not Cadillac’s standard production line. Classic & Sports Car says buyers could order the factory-approved conversion through a Cadillac dealer, with the donor car then sent to the coachbuilder. Factory approval did not make the Castilian a regular factory-built Cadillac wagon.
Accounts place the company’s activity around 1974–1977; Classic & Sports Car says Traditional Coach Works Ltd was founded in 1975 by James Kribbs and Jack Patrick. Those descriptions refer to different things—an approximate period of activity versus a reported founding date—and do not establish a more exact company timeline.
How many Cadillac Castilians were made?
The published figures do not establish a settled all-years production total. HOT ROD reported 11 Castilians “by most accounts” in its feature on a 1976 car. Classic & Sports Car reported 11 conversions in 1976 and said another 40 were believed to have been made in 1975. The most useful way to state the rarity is with those dates and attributions, rather than treating 11 as a definitive total for every year.

What made the Castilian different from a Fleetwood sedan?
The conversion replaced the sedan’s rear body with a custom fiberglass roof that sloped toward a fastback-style liftgate. Stainless-steel trim formed a Targa-style band around the roof, giving the long-roof car a distinctive profile. In HOT ROD’s 2022 feature, Castilian owner Hiram Bond described the roof as “custom-constructed from fiberglass” and said its raked shape and stainless-steel band gave the wagon a “sporty country-club” look.

The underlying car remained recognizably a large, luxurious Fleetwood. HOT ROD’s description of its featured example lists leather upholstery, power seats and windows, power steering and brakes, cruise control, air conditioning, tilt steering, and rear footrests. Equipment can vary between cars, and that feature is not evidence that every surviving Castilian retains all of those items.
What were the Castilian’s size and mechanical specifications?
HOT ROD gives the featured car a 133-inch wheelbase and 233.7-inch overall length, with a 500-cubic-inch (about 8.2-litre) Cadillac V8, a four-barrel Rochester carburetor, and a Turbo-Hydramatic transmission. Classic & Sports Car gives the late-period engine output as 190 bhp. These are published specifications in their respective year and vehicle contexts, not inspection findings for every Castilian.

What did a Castilian cost when new?
Classic & Sports Car reports a 1976 original price of $30,000, roughly twice the price of a well-optioned Fleetwood Sixty Special Brougham. That period figure illustrates the cost of the bespoke conversion; it is not a current market valuation.
Were Elvis Presley or other celebrities Castilian owners?
Published accounts associate Castilians with Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, and John Wayne, but the names should not be treated as proof of ownership of any particular surviving car. Classic & Sports Car warns that celebrity stories can be confused with other Cadillac station wagons from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. A specific claim needs documentation tied to that individual vehicle, such as a credible ownership record or provenance file.
