Reports confirm that smoke came from a deck loaded with electric vehicles, but do not establish that an EV started the fire.
What happened aboard the Morning Midas?
The fire was reported on June 3, 2025, while the Liberia-flagged Morning Midas was about 300 miles (490 kilometers) southwest of Adak Island, Alaska. The ship was approximately 600 feet (183 meters) long and had been built in 2006. Smoke was seen coming from a deck carrying electric vehicles; that location alone does not identify what ignited the fire.
The ship’s onboard fire-suppression system could not control the flames. Its 22 crew members abandoned the vessel in a lifeboat and were rescued by the nearby merchant ship Cosco Hellas. No crew injuries were reported. The Coast Guard’s Seventeenth District commander, Rear Admiral Megan Dean, thanked the nearby vessels that assisted and the Cosco Hellas crew for helping save the 22 lives.
How many electric vehicles were on the ship?
The Morning Midas carried about 3,000 vehicles bound for Mexico. The Associated Press later reported that the cargo included about 70 fully electric vehicles and 680 hybrids. Those categories should not be conflated: the report does not describe all 750 vehicles as battery-electric.

Did an electric vehicle start the fire?
The available reporting does not establish the ignition source or say that an electric vehicle started the fire. The fact that smoke was observed coming from a deck loaded with EVs is not proof that an EV battery caused it. The reports cited here do not provide findings from an official casualty investigation, so a cause should not be presented as confirmed.
Did the Morning Midas sink?
Yes. The damaged vessel later sank in international waters off Alaska, at a reported depth of about 16,404 feet (5,000 meters) and roughly 415 miles (770 kilometers) from land. Its owner, Zodiac Maritime, attributed the sinking to fire damage compounded by bad weather and water seepage.

At the time of the Associated Press sinking report, a Coast Guard spokesperson said there was no visible pollution. Vessels remained on scene to respond to any pollution. That statement describes conditions at the time of that report, not a guarantee about later conditions.
