It reinterpreted the EB 112, an earlier Bugatti super-saloon proposal first shown in 1993. The two cars are related, but they were separate concepts with different engines.
What was the EB 218?
The EB 218 was Bugatti’s 1999 vision of an ultra-luxury saloon. Italdesign says Volkswagen, which acquired Bugatti in 1998, requested a reinterpretation of the EB 112. The resulting concept measured 5,375 mm long and used a 6,300 cc W18 rated at 550 hp. Bugatti’s history also identifies the W18 as the engine used in the EB 118 concept.
Those figures describe the EB 218, not the earlier EB 112. The latter used a V12 and appeared six years earlier.
Italdesign’s EB 218 project history and Bugatti’s concept history document the car and its Geneva debut.

How did the EB 112 set it up?
The EB 112 was presented in 1993 as an “extra deluxe” saloon designed by Italdesign. Its shape drew on Bugattis of the 1920s and 1930s, including the Atlantic, Tipo 55, Tipo 32 Tank and Type 57 Tank. The concept paired those historical references with contemporary construction and engineering: an aluminium body over a carbon chassis, a front-mid-mounted engine and permanent four-wheel drive.
Inside, Italdesign describes leather and walnut trim, plus a videotape system with a small monitor in front of the passenger. That combination of formal, heritage-inspired styling and unusually lavish equipment made the EB 112 a distinctly ambitious luxury-car proposal.

Why didn’t the EB 112 reach production?
Bugatti’s history of its Campogalliano factory says the EB 112 “could no longer be delivered.” In a separate account, Bugatti describes the nearly completed super saloon as unable to be launched. The evidence supports treating it as an unrealized production proposal, not a model customers could buy as a series-production car.
Bugatti’s account of the Campogalliano factory and its retrospective on Romano Artioli describe what happened to the project.

Why the EB 218 still stands out
The EB 218 carried the EB 112’s luxury-saloon idea into a new Bugatti chapter after Volkswagen’s acquisition, but its W18 made it a distinct concept rather than simply a V12 EB 112 with a later date. Its 1999 Geneva appearance is the likely source of the “bonkers Bugatti sedan” memory: a huge luxury four-door conceived around an engine layout more commonly associated with experimental supercar projects than conventional saloons.
