The Buick 455 is a 455-cubic-inch, 90-degree V8, but its specifications depend on the year and tune. A 1970 reference table lists the standard engine at 350 bhp and the Stage I at 360 bhp; a U.S. Department of Transportation study lists a lower-compression 1975 455 at 205 bhp. Those figures describe different configurations and rating contexts, not one engine specification that applies to every Buick 455.

Buick 455 specifications at a glance

The Buick 455’s nominal bore is 4.3125 inches and its stroke is 3.900 inches, yielding 455 cubic inches of displacement. A federal study of a 1975 Buick 455 4V independently reports a 4.312-inch bore, 3.900-inch stroke and 455 cubic inches. The small bore-dimension difference reflects the figures as each source reports them; use the year- and application-specific service information for actual repair work.

The table separates the two 1970 entries in Team Buick’s reference table from the manufacturer specifications for the 1975 engine recorded in a U.S. Department of Transportation study. The numbers should not be read as a continuous year-by-year progression or as directly equivalent ratings.

Configuration and source Displacement and dimensions Compression Rated output in source
1970 standard 455, Team Buick reference table 455 cu. in.; 4.3125 × 3.900 in. bore and stroke 10.0:1 350 bhp at 4,600 rpm; 510 lb-ft at 2,600 rpm
1970 Stage I 455, Team Buick reference table 455 cu. in.; 4.3125 × 3.900 in. bore and stroke 10.5:1 360 bhp at 4,600 rpm; 510 lb-ft at 2,800 rpm
1975 Buick 455 4V, DOT report 455 cu. in.; 4.312 × 3.900 in. bore and stroke 8.0:1 Manufacturer specification: 205 bhp at 3,800 rpm; 345 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm

The 1970 figures come from Team Buick’s 400, 430 and 1970 Buick 455 specifications table. The 1975 figures are identified as manufacturer specifications in the Department of Transportation’s study of U.S. automotive-engine performance characteristics. The DOT report describes a 1975 engine; its publication year is not established by the available record.

What changed between the standard 455 and Stage I?

In the 1970 reference table, Stage I is a distinct higher-output tune, not a different displacement. It is listed with 10.5:1 compression and 360 bhp, versus 10.0:1 and 350 bhp for the standard 455. Both entries show 510 lb-ft, but the listed peak-torque speeds differ: 2,800 rpm for Stage I and 2,600 rpm for standard.

A 1988 Hot Rod retrospective describes Stage I hardware beyond the table’s ratings: a hotter hydraulic cam, stiffer valve springs, oversize valves, a richer Quadrajet calibration, and recalibrated ignition and automatic-transmission functions. It also reports increased oil pressure. Treat these as the retrospective’s account of the Stage I package, not as proof that every engine bearing a 455 designation shares identical components.

What the oiling changes do—and do not—show

The same retrospective reports that Buick used a stiffer oil-pump relief spring and, in mid-1970, enlarged the oil pickup and connecting-galley diameters from 0.5625 to 0.625 inches. These are reported design changes; they do not establish a universal oiling failure in all Buick 455 engines. For a particular engine, diagnosis should be based on its condition and the correct service information rather than a blanket assumption.

See Hot Rod’s “First Stage Flyer: Buick’s ’70 GS455 Stage 1” for the retrospective account.

Why 1975 output figures are different

The 1975 engine in the DOT report is specified at 8.0:1 compression, 205 bhp at 3,800 rpm and 345 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm. These values differ substantially from the 1970 reference-table figures, alongside a lower compression ratio and a later model year. They should not be used to revise or contradict the 1970 figures: the sources describe different year-specific configurations and contexts.

When evaluating a Buick 455 claim, ask which model year, tune and source the figure describes. An unqualified horsepower number hides the distinction between the 1970 standard and Stage I entries and the 1975 specification.

How to identify a Buick 455

Engine codes can help distinguish versions, but they are only one identification clue. Team Buick’s production-code reference lists SR for a 1970 GS 455 standard engine and SS for a 1970 GS 455 Stage I; it also gives different codes for 1971 variants. A code alone does not authenticate an engine or establish that it is original to a particular car.

  1. Identify the car’s claimed model year and engine version, such as standard GS 455 or Stage I.
  2. Compare the engine code with a year-specific reference, such as Team Buick’s U.S. engine production-code table.
  3. Check the engine’s stamped and cast identifiers against factory documentation for the specific vehicle and application.

The cited code reference covers selected 1970–1971 distinctions; it is not a complete authentication procedure or a full application list. Verify the car and engine against their own records rather than treating a matching code as conclusive.

Service information and rebuild specifications

A digitized Buick 350/455 service manual includes trouble diagnosis, engine description and operation, removal and installation, repair procedures, bolt torque specifications, general specifications, and engine dimensions and fits. Its coverage makes it relevant to servicing these engines, but the manual edition and application must match the engine being worked on.

The manual is available through Manualzz’s digitized Buick 350/455 service manual. Because OCR can garble technical tables, confirm critical clearances, torque values and machining decisions against a clean scan or a factory manual for the correct year before using them in a rebuild.
