Yes, Aston Martin really did put a V8 in a Cygnet. Announced on 12 July 2018, the car was a one-off Q by Aston Martin commission for a single customer—not a production model. It combined the Cygnet’s compact body with the naturally aspirated 4.7-litre V8 and rear-wheel-drive hardware from the Vantage S. Aston Martin quoted 430bhp, 0–60mph in 4.2 seconds and a 170mph top speed.
What was the Aston Martin Cygnet V8?
It was a bespoke conversion of a right-hand-drive Cygnet, commissioned through Aston Martin’s Q personalisation service. The company announced it on 12 July 2018 and planned its debut for that year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. Aston Martin described it as built for a single customer; it was not a regular Cygnet trim or a production-run model. Aston Martin’s announcement and technical specification set out the build and its headline figures.
The idea was deliberately contradictory: a city-sized luxury commuter transformed into a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive performance car. The Cygnet identity and compact silhouette remained, but the engine, chassis, transmission, brakes and interior were extensively altered.
How powerful and fast was it?
Aston Martin’s 2018 specification lists the V8 Cygnet’s naturally aspirated 4.7-litre engine at 430bhp and 490Nm (361lb ft). The engine was front-mid-mounted, dry-sump lubricated and sourced from the V8 Vantage S. Power went to the rear wheels through a seven-speed Sportshift II transmission, also from the Vantage S.

| Specification | Aston Martin figure or description |
|---|---|
| Engine | Naturally aspirated 4.7-litre V8, sourced from the Vantage S |
| Power and torque | 430bhp; 490Nm (361lb ft) |
| Transmission and drive | Seven-speed Sportshift II; rear-wheel drive |
| Weight | 1,375kg when full of fluids |
| Power-to-weight ratio | 313bhp per tonne |
| 0–60mph | 4.2 seconds |
| Top speed | 170mph |
Those acceleration, speed, weight and power-to-weight figures are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from an independent instrumented test. Aston Martin’s 2018 release described its 170mph top speed as more than 60mph faster than the regular Cygnet.
What had to change to fit the V8?
This was more than an engine swap. Aston Martin’s specification describes structural work to accommodate the larger powertrain and its rear-drive layout, including a shortened torque tube, a fabricated front bulkhead and transmission tunnel, and Vantage subframes. A welded-in cage was integrated into the shell. The car also received a steel fuel-tank housing mounted in the boot and flared carbon-composite wheel arches.

Autocar’s contemporaneous report on the Cygnet V8 likewise describes modifications to the chassis and tunnel to accommodate the Vantage-sourced engine and seven-speed transmission.
What was inside, and how was it equipped?
The commission traded the standard Cygnet’s commuter emphasis for a two-seat performance-car interior. Aston Martin listed fixed-back Recaro composite seats, four-point harnesses, a bespoke carbon-composite instrument panel and a full FIA-compliant fire-extinguisher system. Braking hardware comprised 380mm front discs with six-piston monoblock calipers and 330mm rear discs with four-piston calipers.

How different was it from a standard Cygnet?
Aston Martin’s retrospective describes the standard Cygnet as a compact luxury commuter for city use, with low-emission engine technology, usable rear seats and a 106mph top speed. The company’s Cygnet history provides that context. The V8 commission kept the small-car form but changed its purpose, powertrain, driven wheels, structure and seating.
| Standard Cygnet | V8 Cygnet commission | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Compact luxury city commuter, as described by Aston Martin | Bespoke two-seat performance conversion |

| Driven wheels | Not stated in the cited retrospective | Rear-wheel drive |

What is not known?
The 2018 announcement establishes the car’s one-off status when it was unveiled, but the cited sources do not establish its current owner, location, sale status, price or any later modifications. The published performance figures should likewise be read as Aston Martin’s specifications: the available sources do not provide independent test measurements.
