The Birth and Evolution of the Genesis Car Brand

Genesis began as Hyundai’s premium sedan name. In 2015, Hyundai launched it as a standalone luxury marque, which expanded from sedans into SUVs and electric models.

Genesis began as the name of a Hyundai sedan, not as a separate automaker. Hyundai announced Genesis as a standalone luxury marque on November 4, 2015, then built its first lineup around the EQ900/G90, G80 and G70. The brand has since expanded beyond sedans: Genesis describes its current U.S. range as including SUVs and electric models.

Genesis started as a Hyundai sedan

Before Genesis was a standalone marque, it was the name on Hyundai’s premium sedan. Hyundai’s corporate timeline records the first-generation Hyundai Genesis in 2008 and the second generation in 2013. As late as October 2015, Hyundai Motor America was still referring to the vehicle as the Hyundai Genesis sedan.

That distinction matters: the car’s existing name and history provided a starting point for a new luxury brand, but the Genesis marque itself came later.

When did Genesis become its own car brand?

Hyundai Motor Company announced Genesis as a standalone global luxury brand on November 4, 2015. The company said it would operate alongside Hyundai and positioned the marque around “human-centered” luxury, refined performance, athletic elegance and human-focused innovation. Those phrases describe Hyundai’s intended brand identity, not independent findings about customer experience.

In its launch announcement, Hyundai said: “Created for a new generation of discerning consumers, Genesis will be a stand-alone brand that operates alongside the company’s popular Hyundai marque.” The same announcement proposed six new models by 2020. That was the original plan; the announcement alone does not establish whether the target was met on schedule.

The first Genesis models established a three-sedan foundation

EQ900 and G90

The first model after the marque’s official launch was the EQ900, introduced in late 2015. Hyundai Motor Group identifies G90 as its global name. The group’s later retrospective says more than 1,200 dedicated researchers worked for approximately four years on development of the EQ900; those figures are the parent company’s account of the project.

G80 and G70

The G80 followed in 2016, and Hyundai’s corporate timeline places the G70 in 2017. Together with the G90, these models gave Genesis a three-car, sedan-led foundation across different segments. The sequence marked a move from a single Hyundai model name to a distinct brand with a developing lineup.

Genesis expanded from sedans into SUVs and electric models

Genesis’s current U.S. brand page describes a range that includes sedans, SUVs and electric models. This reflects a broader portfolio than the sedan-led launch, but it is a U.S.-market description: it does not mean every Genesis model is offered in every country.

Hyundai Motor Group’s 2025 retrospective describes Genesis as the group’s luxury brand and looks back on its development since its launch at the end of 2015. The available milestones establish the direction of expansion, but do not by themselves provide a complete model-by-model launch history for every market.

From its original rollout plan to its 2030 ambitions

Genesis’s scale has grown beyond the initial announcement’s proposed six-model rollout. Hyundai Motor Company reported in 2026 that Genesis had reached one million cumulative vehicle sales in its first 10 years. This is a company-reported milestone.

Hyundai also set forward-looking goals for 2030: sales in more than 40 markets and 350,000 annual vehicle sales. These are targets, not current results. The shift from a 2015 plan for six models by 2020 to broader market and annual-sales goals illustrates how the company now frames the brand’s ambitions; it does not prove that earlier plans were achieved exactly as announced.

Is Genesis still a Hyundai brand?

Genesis is a separate luxury marque that Hyundai announced would operate alongside the Hyundai brand. It is not the original Hyundai Genesis sedan under a new badge: the name first belonged to that car, then became the identity of a standalone brand. The history and current company announcements cited here come from Hyundai and Genesis sources, so they establish the company’s timeline and stated goals rather than independent judgments of the brand’s reception or performance.
