The 2017 BMW 3 Series is the strongest used-BMW reliability candidate in the model-year evidence available here. The 2020 3 Series and 2020 X3 are also worth considering: Consumer Reports rates each as more reliable than other cars from its model year. These are comparative survey findings, not guarantees about a specific car. Check the individual vehicle’s records, condition, recall status and diagnostic codes before buying.
Which used BMW models are the strongest reliability candidates?
Consumer Reports’ model-year comparisons support a focused shortlist rather than a claim that any BMW is reliably trouble-free. Its reliability histories draw on member surveys and cover 20 potential trouble spots. The publisher says these histories can help buyers improve their odds, but they cannot guarantee an individual car’s reliability. Consumer Reports explains its reliability-history methodology.

Consumer Reports’ cited pages describe how each model year compares with other cars from that same year. They do not establish that one of these BMWs is more reliable than every other BMW, and the available evidence does not provide numerical scores for ranking the candidates against one another.
Why the model year matters
Reliability results vary across years, even within the same BMW line. Consumer Reports describes the 2018 3 Series as less reliable than other cars from its model year, unlike its favorable descriptions of the 2017 and 2020 3 Series. Its findings also distinguish between X3 years: the 2016 X3 is described as less reliable than same-year cars, while the 2020 X3 is described as more reliable. These labels are relative comparisons, not a prediction that every example of a less-favorably rated year will fail or that every example of a more-favorably rated year will be trouble-free. Engine, trim, maintenance, mileage and condition can all matter for the car in front of you.
Should you buy a used BMW 5 Series?
The evidence here does not support calling the 5 Series a standout reliability pick. Consumer Reports describes the 2020 5 Series as about average compared with other 2020 cars and the 2016 5 Series as less reliable than same-year cars. How to check a specific used BMW before buying
A model-year trend can help narrow a search, but the purchase decision is about one vehicle. Use the following checks before committing:
- Review maintenance and repair records. Look for a consistent history and investigate gaps or repeated repairs rather than relying on a seller’s summary.
- Check for warning lights and diagnostic trouble codes. An OBD-II scanner can help reveal stored codes, but a basic scanner may not access every BMW module and cannot certify the car’s health or predict future failures. Confirm the scanner’s model-year compatibility and BMW system coverage.
- Check open recalls by VIN. Ask the seller about any outstanding recall work and verify the vehicle’s status before purchase.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the car’s mechanical condition; do not treat survey results or a clean scan as a substitute.
- Compare the asking price with likely upkeep. A well-kept used luxury car can still cost more to maintain and repair than a mainstream alternative.
Budget for luxury-car maintenance
Buying used does not make BMW upkeep equivalent to that of a mainstream car. In a March 2026 article, The Associated Press reported an Edmunds estimate that a BMW X3 costs approximately twice as much to maintain on average as a Honda CR-V. How to treat other used-BMW recommendations
Other buying guides may suggest years or engine-and-trim combinations beyond this shortlist. Autoblog’s February 2026 used-BMW guide, for example, offers additional recommendations, but its page includes generation/year inconsistencies: it labels a 2017 X3 as a G01 and a 2022 5 Series as an F10.
