Pinkbike’s 2024 community survey shows which brands its respondents owned and were considering; it does not measure reliability, value, or ride quality. Pinkbike’s 2025 warranty comparison shows why support terms deserve scrutiny, but it is not a controlled test of every brand. Choose by comparing specific bikes for your riding, fit, specification, local service, and the exact warranty that applies.
What the brand rankings actually tell you
Pinkbike’s 2024 community survey found Specialized and Santa Cruz at the top of respondents’ primary mountain-bike brands, with Transition third. Respondents’ likely next-bike choices broadly echoed those leaders; Pivot and Rocky Mountain moved up compared with the survey’s 2021 dataset. These are signals of popularity and purchase interest among Pinkbike respondents—not proof that those brands make better or more reliable bikes.
The year-to-year figures also describe survey responses, not market share or product performance. Specialized’s share of the survey comparison increased by 2.46 percentage points from 2021 to 2024; Transition’s increased by 2.37 points. Santa Cruz accounted for 9.1% of respondents’ primary bikes in 2024, compared with 9.37% in 2021. Giant was selected by 2.4% in 2024, down from 4.46% in 2021. None of those changes establishes a quality ranking. Pinkbike’s 2024 survey comparison provides the findings and context.
The survey’s reported median likely next-bike spend was $5,000–$7,499, compared with $4,000–$4,999 in 2021. That is a respondent-reported spending range, not a recommended budget or a statement about what a suitable bike should cost.

Which mountain-bike brands should you avoid?
A brand-wide avoid list is not supported by the available evidence. The sources do not establish that any named manufacturer is universally unreliable, poor value, or unsuitable. A survey ranking cannot answer those questions, and an isolated complaint or a policy weakness does not prove every bike from a brand is a bad choice.
Instead, treat a specific bike as a poor fit if its geometry or category does not suit your riding, its specification and price do not work for you, dependable local servicing is unavailable, or its warranty terms leave costs and exclusions you are unwilling to accept. Assess the exact model and policy in the market where you will buy it.

How to compare bikes from different brands
Start with the bike, not the logo. A brand may sell bikes for very different disciplines, and the sources here do not provide controlled, model-by-model ride, fit, or price comparisons from which to declare a winner.
- Riding category: Match the bike to cross-country, trail, enduro, downhill, or electric-assisted riding as applicable. A brand’s popularity does not make every category it sells right for your use.
- Fit and geometry: Check the particular model and size against your body, terrain, and riding preferences. Do not infer fit from a company-wide reputation.
- Specification and price: Compare the complete bikes you are actually considering, including their components and asking prices. The available survey data does not establish which brand offers better value.
- Evidence for the model: Give more weight to independent reviews of the exact bike and documented, recurring issues than to popularity statistics or isolated anecdotes.
- Service access: Find out whether a nearby shop can service the bike and whether warranty claims go through that retailer. Ask who would pay labor and shipping if a claim is accepted.
Read the warranty for the exact bike and region
“Lifetime warranty” is not a complete description of what a buyer receives. Pinkbike technical editor Stephane Pelletier wrote in its 2025 analysis: “A lifetime warranty sounds great, but the fine print often includes exclusions, conditions, and costs that make it less generous than it seems.” That is an editorial observation; the practical point is to read the policy itself.

Pinkbike’s February 2025 comparison used a current non-electric trail bike as its baseline and cautioned that a company’s terms can differ across products. Its analysis highlights differences buyers should check:
- What is covered: Confirm the exact frame, fork, components, materials, and intended use included. The comparison describes exclusions such as wear, misuse, improper assembly, modifications, corrosion, excessive load, and some downhill or freeride use; these are not universal terms for every brand.
- Who is eligible: Check whether coverage transfers to another owner, requires registration, or depends on proof of purchase or other conditions.
- What happens after a crash: Look for crash-replacement provisions and their conditions. Do not assume crash damage is covered by a standard warranty.
- What a claim costs: Establish whether labor or shipping is covered, and whether a retailer must handle the claim.
- How to maintain eligibility: Check service requirements, including any annual inspection or dealer-maintenance conditions.
- Where the policy applies: Read the terms for the bike’s model, purchase date, and sales region; do not transfer a policy statement from one product or market to another.

A recent example of why policy details matter
In a January 13, 2026 report, Pinkbike said Belgian Cycling Factory introduced conditional transferable warranty coverage for eligible purchases from January 1, 2026. The report described coverage for frames and forks across most of the company’s named brands, subject to conditions including registration within 30 days and annual maintenance by a certified dealer. It said Nukeproof downhill models remained on two-year coverage, and that the defined frame “lifetime” was capped at ten years from purchase. These are reported terms for specified eligible products, not a general warranty duration across brands. Check the current official policy and the exact model’s eligibility before relying on them.
