There is no single, source-backed winner among 2024 midsize luxury SUVs: Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book use different rating and ranking methods, and their published figures do not always match. The right choice depends first on whether you need two rows or three, then on your priorities for comfort, fuel economy, performance, cargo room and price. These are model-year comparisons, not current new-car offers; 2024 models are now used inventory.
How to choose among 2024 midsize luxury SUVs
Start with the job the SUV must do. The Audi Q7 is the clear three-row option in this group, but its rear seat is better suited to children than adults. The Genesis GV80 also offers an available small third row, while the BMW X5, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q8 are best considered against your two-row needs and the exact configuration you find.
Then compare the specific trim and powertrain, not just the nameplate. A model range can include engines with materially different performance and fuel economy. Published starting prices and combined-mpg figures below are source-specific reference points; they are not quotes for a particular used vehicle or guaranteed transaction prices.
2024 midsize luxury SUV comparison
| Model | Layout and standout use | Edmunds 2024 comparison figures | Other cited evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz GLE | Consider it if Edmunds’ rating is a useful starting point in your shortlist. | 8.4/10; $63,800 starting MSRP; 23 mpg combined; 33.3 cu. ft. maximum cargo capacity. | KBB’s 2024 list displays a $46,400 starting price and 22 mpg combined; these are KBB figures and differ from Edmunds’ displayed values. |
| BMW X5 | Two-row, well-rounded road manners with a choice of powertrains. | 8.1/10; $65,200 starting MSRP; 25 mpg combined; 33.9 cu. ft. maximum cargo capacity. | Car and Driver estimates 23 mpg city/27 highway for sDrive40i and xDrive40i, and 17 city/22 highway for M60i. |
| Genesis GV80 | Comfort and utility, with an available small third row. | 7.9/10; $57,700 starting MSRP; 22 mpg combined; 34.9 cu. ft. maximum cargo capacity. | Edmunds reports EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined for the four-cylinder; its RX comparison favors GV80 comfort and utility. |
| Lexus RX | Lower published entry price in Edmunds’ RX-GV80 comparison and a range of hybrid choices. | 7.8/10; $48,600 starting MSRP; 25 mpg combined; 29.6 cu. ft. maximum cargo capacity. | KBB displays $44,600 starting price and 24 mpg combined. Edmunds reports up to EPA-estimated 36 mpg combined for RX 350h. |
| Audi Q8 | Two-row alternative; compare its price and efficiency against your needs. | 7.8/10; $73,700 starting MSRP; 19 mpg combined; 30.5 cu. ft. maximum cargo capacity. | No additional comparative figures established here. |
| Audi Q7 | Three rows and standard AWD; rearmost row best for children. | not stated (Edmunds comparison values above do not include a Q7). | Car and Driver says the V6 version can tow up to 7,000 pounds. |
Edmunds figures are values displayed on its 2024-model comparison page; KBB figures are from its 2024 list. Starting-price and fuel-economy figures can differ by source, configuration and method, so compare like-for-like trims rather than treating cross-publisher values as directly interchangeable.

Which SUV fits your priorities?
For balanced ride and handling: BMW X5
Car and Driver describes the X5 as an agreeable, luxurious middle ground, praising its refined ride and stable handling. Its 2024 review calls it one of the publication’s favorite midsize crossovers and notes an Editors’ Choice award. The range includes a turbocharged inline-six and a V8: the cited estimates show the performance-oriented M60i returning lower fuel economy than the sDrive40i and xDrive40i. Choose by the driving character and running costs you want, not by assuming every X5 has the same economy.
For three-row flexibility: Audi Q7
The Q7 provides three rows and standard all-wheel drive, but the third row is a compromise for passenger space: Car and Driver says it is best only for kids. If you regularly carry adults in back, sit in the actual vehicle with those passengers before deciding. The review says the V6 version is rated to tow up to 7,000 pounds; confirm the exact powertrain and vehicle configuration before relying on a tow rating.
Rank #2
For comfort and utility: Genesis GV80
In Edmunds’ comparison with the RX, the GV80 stands out for comfort and utility, including more cargo room and an available small third row. Its four-cylinder version is listed by Edmunds at EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined. If the third row matters, treat it as occasional-use seating and verify the specific vehicle has that equipment.
For hybrid choice and a lower published entry point: Lexus RX
Edmunds’ RX-GV80 comparison presents the RX as the lower-starting-price choice and notes several powertrains, including hybrids. It reports up to EPA-estimated 36 mpg combined for the RX 350h. That figure applies to the named hybrid configuration, not every RX; check the exact powertrain and EPA listing for the vehicle you are considering.
Rank #3
For a high Edmunds score in this selection: Mercedes-Benz GLE
Edmunds gives the 2024 GLE the highest rating among the models with scores in its comparison here, at 8.4/10. That is Edmunds’ publisher-specific rating, not an objective class-wide verdict or a promise that a particular used GLE is the best buy. Compare its actual trim, equipment, condition and price with the alternatives.
For a two-row Audi alternative: Audi Q8
Edmunds lists the Q8 at 7.8/10, with a displayed starting MSRP of $73,700 and 19 mpg combined. Those comparison-page figures make it worth evaluating against your own priorities and budget, but they do not establish a universal advantage over other two-row choices.
Rank #4
Safety ratings: confirm the exact year and equipment
IIHS lists the 2024 Lexus RX as a Top Safety Pick. Its page lists the 2024–25 Genesis GV80 as Top Safety Pick+ for vehicles built after August 2023, and the 2024–25 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class as Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with optional pedestrian front crash prevention. These conditions matter: an award is not automatically applicable to every build or equipment package.
IIHS lists a Top Safety Pick+ for the 2025 BMW X5, but that does not establish the same award for a 2024 X5. Check the IIHS 2024 midsize luxury SUV awards and verify that the rating applies to the model year, build date and equipment of the specific vehicle.

What to verify before buying a 2024 model
- Identify the exact configuration. Confirm trim, engine, drivetrain, seating layout and installed options from the vehicle’s documentation and listing.
- Check price against current local listings. The cited starting prices are model-year reference figures, not current used-car values or transaction offers.
- Inspect condition and history. Review the vehicle history and have the particular vehicle inspected; a model-level review cannot establish an individual vehicle’s condition.
- Test the seating and cargo layout. Bring the people and gear you expect to carry, especially if considering a Q7 or a GV80 with its optional third row.
- Verify safety applicability and economy. Match IIHS results to the build and equipment, and check fuel-economy figures for the exact powertrain rather than relying on a model-wide number.
