The Model 3 is the sedan choice for commuters and buyers seeking a lower entry price; the Model Y suits shoppers who want SUV packaging and more cargo flexibility; the Model S and Model X are Tesla’s larger premium sedan and SUV alternatives; and the Cybertruck is for buyers who specifically need a pickup. This guide focuses on U.S. configurations and prices shown on Tesla pages accessed October 8, 2026. Confirm current local pricing, trims and specifications in Tesla’s configurator before ordering.
How to choose the best Tesla for you
Start with the vehicle you need, not the most expensive model you can afford. A sedan, SUV and pickup solve different problems, and range or performance figures only make sense when tied to a particular configuration.
- Body style and access: Decide whether a sedan’s lower profile or an SUV’s taller, more versatile layout better suits your passengers and daily routine.
- Passenger and cargo needs: Check the exact seating configuration and cargo specifications for the trim in your market. Do not assume every Model Y has the same number of seats or every trim the same cargo capacity.
- Work and towing: If you regularly haul or tow, compare the vehicle’s stated towing capacity with your actual load and use case. The Cybertruck is the lineup’s pickup; the Model Y also has a stated towing capacity in a specific configuration.
- Range and performance: Compare EPA-estimated range and acceleration for the exact trim and wheel configuration. Tesla says range and charging measurements can vary with configuration, charge state, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation; real-world results can differ.
- Price and charging: Compare a current local quote with the cost and feasibility of charging at home or nearby. Vehicle price is only one part of the buying decision.
Tesla’s 2025 annual filing says it manufactures five consumer vehicles: Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck. Tesla’s comparison page currently presents Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck side by side, but that shorter comparison does not represent the full consumer lineup.
Which Tesla model is best for each kind of buyer?
Model 3: best for a sedan-oriented buyer
The Model 3 is a four-door, mid-size sedan that Tesla says was designed with a base price for mass-market appeal. It is the natural starting point if you want a Tesla sedan for commuting or everyday passenger use and do not need SUV or pickup packaging.

On Tesla’s U.S. product page accessed October 8, 2026, the Model 3 Standard rear-wheel drive was listed with five seats, 24 cubic feet of cargo space and 321 miles of EPA-estimated range. The Model 3 Premium all-wheel drive was listed at 346 miles of EPA-estimated range. Tesla showed a starting price of $38,630 for the Standard rear-wheel-drive configuration and $44,130 for the Premium all-wheel-drive configuration in Massachusetts; those prices included destination and order fees but excluded taxes and other fees, and Tesla says prices are subject to change.
Those figures are configuration- and location-specific, not universal Model 3 specifications or a guarantee of what a buyer will pay elsewhere. Verify the trim, wheels and current local quote before comparing it with another Tesla.
Model Y: best for SUV packaging and cargo flexibility
The Model Y is Tesla’s SUV-oriented option, built on the Model 3 platform according to the company’s 2025 filing. Consider it when a sedan’s shape or cargo layout is not as practical for your passengers and belongings.

Tesla’s U.S. utility page lists a Model Y Long Range AWD configuration with up to seven seats, 76 cubic feet of cargo space and a 3,500-pound towing capacity. Treat those as specifications for that stated configuration, not as figures that automatically apply to every Model Y. Confirm both the seating arrangement offered locally and the specifications of the trim you intend to buy.
Model S: a full-size premium sedan
The Model S is Tesla’s full-size sedan. In its 2025 Form 10-K, Tesla describes the Model S as having the longest range and highest performance characteristics among the company’s sedan offerings. That is Tesla’s positioning, not an independent comparative test. Current price, range, seating and availability are not established here; check the live configurator for your market before making a purchase decision.
Model X: an SUV alternative in Tesla’s premium lineup
The Model X is Tesla’s SUV offering in the larger premium segment. Tesla’s filing describes it as a midsize SUV that seats up to seven and says it has the longest range and highest performance characteristics among Tesla’s SUV offerings. These are claims by Tesla, not third-party rankings. Verify the current local configuration, seating, price and range directly with Tesla.

Cybertruck: best suited to buyers who need a pickup
Cybertruck is a full-size electric pickup with a stainless-steel exterior, according to Tesla’s 2025 filing. It belongs on the shortlist when a truck bed or towing utility is central to the purchase—not simply because it is another Tesla to compare with passenger cars.
Tesla’s U.S. product listing accessed October 8, 2026, showed an AWD configuration with 325 miles of EPA-estimated range, towing capacity of up to 11,000 pounds and 120.7 cubic feet of cargo space. A separate performance configuration was listed with 325 miles of EPA-estimated range, 7,500 pounds of towing capacity and 117.3 cubic feet of cargo space. These are trim-specific manufacturer figures; compare the exact version with your needs and confirm the current listing.

Model 3 or Model Y: which should you buy?
Choose between them by body style and the way you use the vehicle. The Model 3 is the sedan-oriented choice; the Model Y is the SUV-oriented choice. The Model Y Long Range AWD listing provides a concrete example of the SUV’s utility: Tesla states up to seven seats, 76 cubic feet of cargo space and 3,500 pounds of towing capacity for that configuration. The Model 3 page lists five seats and 24 cubic feet of cargo space for its Standard rear-wheel-drive configuration.

These published specifications are not a direct, like-for-like comparison of every trim. Before deciding, compare the specific Model 3 and Model Y configurations available to you, including seating, cargo, range, wheels and final local price. If you do not need the SUV layout, do not assume its higher utility makes it a better value for your circumstances.

For the cited configurations, Tesla lists 120.7 cubic feet of cargo space and up to 11,000 pounds of towing for the Cybertruck AWD. Its separate performance configuration is listed at 117.3 cubic feet and 7,500 pounds of towing. Tesla lists 76 cubic feet of cargo space and 3,500 pounds of towing for the Model Y Long Range AWD. Those numbers apply to the stated configurations and should not be treated as model-wide figures.
If you need a truck bed and truck-oriented utility, evaluate the Cybertruck as a pickup rather than as a larger passenger vehicle. If SUV packaging is sufficient, the Model Y’s cited towing capacity may be relevant. Check the latest specifications and confirm that any trailer, load and intended use are within the limits for the exact vehicle you buy.

What should you budget for home charging?
Buying a Tesla and arranging charging are separate decisions. Tesla’s Home Charging page accessed October 8, 2026, listed the following U.S. equipment prices and estimated installation costs. Installation is separate from the hardware price, and Tesla says the job’s cost depends on electrical conditions and complexity.
| Equipment | Compatibility and use | Hardware price listed by Tesla | Estimated installation listed by Tesla |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile Connector | Portable; Tesla vehicles with NACS | $300 | $0–$1,500 for a Mobile Connector setup |
| Wall Connector | Wall-mounted; Tesla vehicles with NACS | $585 | $750–$1,500 for wall-mounted charging equipment |
| Universal Wall Connector | Wall-mounted; NACS and J1772, for all EVs | $660 | $750–$1,500 for wall-mounted charging equipment |
Tesla identifies the Wall Connector as its recommended home-charging solution and advises testing charging equipment with the installer. On a standard household outlet, Tesla says a Mobile Connector may add 2–3 miles of charge per hour; with a compatible 240 V outlet, it may provide up to 30 miles per hour, depending on the vehicle and setup. These are Tesla’s stated charging rates, not a promise of the rate every home or vehicle will achieve. Equipment prices, installation quotes and local incentives can change, so confirm them before budgeting.
Quick Recap
Important checks before you order
- Use Tesla’s market-specific configurator to verify today’s price, available trim, seating, range, towing and equipment; prices and availability can change.
- When comparing range, retain the trim and wheel details and label Tesla’s EPA figures as EPA-estimated. Actual range varies with driving and environmental conditions.
- Check whether the charging equipment will work with your home’s electrical setup and obtain an installer’s assessment of total installation cost.
- Do not treat Tesla’s driver-assistance features as autonomous driving. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K states that the driver remains responsible for staying fully engaged in the driving operation.
