There is no single, objectively “greatest” production-car engine: peak power, sound, response, engineering and award history measure different things. The examples below make a strong cross-era shortlist, not a definitive ranking. They include a Ferrari turbo V8 recognized by an engine-award program, a naturally aspirated Ferrari V12, Porsche flat-six and V10 engines, and Lexus’s V10-powered LFA.

What makes a production-car engine great?

A useful comparison looks beyond horsepower. Configuration and cylinder count shape an engine’s character; induction affects how it delivers power; engineering choices can make a design notable; and awards provide a record of recognition, though not a universal verdict. Sound and response are also legitimate reasons to value an engine, but they are partly matters of taste.

There is no common test in the sources cited here that scores every engine on the same scale. Car and Driver’s editorial feature is a helpful reference for engines in series-production cars, spanning three to twelve cylinders, but it is a selection rather than an independent standard for declaring a winner. Its examples are described as low-volume, high-priced cars available with a factory warranty. Car and Driver’s engine feature

The cars below are therefore grouped by what makes their engines distinctive. Some examples are historical rather than currently offered new; “production” does not mean every model remains in production today.

Which production cars have especially memorable engines?

Ferrari 488 Pista: a turbocharged V8 with repeated award recognition

Ferrari reported that its 3.9-litre turbocharged V8 won the overall International Engine of the Year award for the third consecutive year in 2018. Ferrari also said the 720-cv version in the 488 Pista won the 3-litre-to-4-litre class and Performance Engine category. These are award results reported by Ferrari, not proof of an objective global ranking. Ferrari’s 5 June 2018 award announcement

The engine earns a place here for the combination of a turbocharged configuration and documented recognition. A reader who prizes a turbo engine’s delivery may find it more compelling than a naturally aspirated engine, while someone who values a particular sound or response may prefer another entry. Ferrari’s release describes the V8 as equipping its V8-engined range in various forms; the award claims should remain tied to the stated year and categories.

Ferrari 812 Superfast: naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12

Ferrari said the 812 Superfast’s naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12, rated at 800 cv in its 2018 release, won the above-four-litre category and Best New Engine at that year’s International Engine of the Year awards. Ferrari described it as comprehensively re-engineered from the F12berlinetta’s 6.3-litre engine, with 75% new components. Both the award and component figure are the manufacturer’s 2018 claims. Ferrari’s 2018 announcement

The release uses “cv”; that unit is retained here rather than silently converted to another market’s horsepower convention. For an enthusiast drawn to a large naturally aspirated V12, the 812 is a contrasting choice to the turbocharged V8: the layouts and induction differ, so a power figure alone does not settle which engine is more appealing.

Porsche 911: a 2.7-litre flat-six with historical award recognition

Porsche reported that its 2.7-litre flat-six received an Engine of the Year award in 2013. The company said it was the fourth time one of its flat engines had won the competition by then. This is a historical award result, not a statement about current award status. Porsche’s 7 June 2013 announcement

A flat-six gives this shortlist a configuration distinct from the Ferrari V8 and V12. The award is useful context, but Porsche’s release does not establish that one engine layout is universally superior to another.

Lexus LFA: a V10 chosen for its distinctive character

Lexus identifies the LFA as a V10-engined supercar and discusses the engine’s sound on its performance page. That supports its inclusion as a distinctive V10 example; the cited page does not establish a production count or provide an independently verified performance figure. Lexus High-Performance Cars

Sound can be part of what makes an engine memorable, even though it cannot be reduced to a common score alongside awards or cylinder count. The LFA illustrates why an enthusiast’s idea of “greatest” may depend on the experience an engine creates, not simply its peak output.

Porsche Carrera GT: a naturally aspirated V10 in a historical supercar

Porsche’s historical page on its V8 engines also discusses the Carrera GT’s naturally aspirated V10. Porsche’s page describes the V10 as a street-legal naturally aspirated record-holder in its context and gives a specific output of 132 hp per litre. The page excerpt does not establish its publication year or the date and scope of the comparison, so that figure should be read as a Porsche historical claim, not a current record. The Carrera GT’s V10 is separate from the V8 engines that are the page’s main subject. Porsche’s historical engine overview

How to choose your own “greatest”

Use the quality you care about most, rather than treating this shortlist as a universal league table:

  • For award history: the Ferrari V8 has Ferrari-reported overall wins in 2016, 2017 and 2018; the Porsche flat-six and Ferrari V12 have their own specific historical category or award results described above.
  • For naturally aspirated layouts: the Ferrari 812 Superfast V12, Lexus LFA V10 and Porsche Carrera GT V10 are examples in this selection.
  • For a turbocharged option: the Ferrari V8 is the example here, with its 2018 award record reported by Ferrari.
  • For distinctive configurations: compare the flat-six with the V8, V10 and V12, while remembering that cylinder count alone does not predict which engine you will enjoy most.
  • For sound and sensory character: Lexus explicitly highlights the LFA’s V10 sound; preferences beyond that are subjective.

These are different ways to make a judgment, not interchangeable measurements. If you rank cars by award history, say so; if you prioritize sound or induction, make that criterion explicit. A broader global ranking would require consistent inclusion rules and independent comparisons across more models and eras.
