The Best Audi RS Models Through Time: The Models That Defined the Line

The RS 2 began Audi’s fast-estate story; the B5 RS 4 and first RS 6 developed it into a wider performance-car family.

The best Audi RS models are not one-size-fits-all winners: the RS 2 established the performance-Avant idea, the B5 RS 4 moved the program toward independent Audi development, and the first RS 6 made high speed and executive-car practicality a repeatable flagship formula. This editorial shortlist weighs historical and engineering significance, driving character, body style and everyday usefulness, and each model’s contribution to the RS family. It is a history-led selection, not an objective ranking of every RS car.

What makes an Audi RS model one of the best?

RS is Audi’s designation for its sportiest models. Audi Sport GmbH, formerly quattro GmbH, oversees that performance identity; Audi says only the brand’s sportiest models may use the R and RS abbreviations. The family has never been a single type of car: it spans compact models, estates, sportbacks, SUVs and an electric grand tourer.

That breadth makes a simple fastest-to-slowest ranking misleading. The models below stand out for different reasons: some began a tradition, some introduced important engineering, and others show how far the RS idea expanded. Audi’s portfolio retrospectives document that evolution, while an independent visual history offers another cross-family view.

The defining early RS models

Audi Avant RS 2 (1994): the origin of the RS estate story

The RS 2 is the essential starting point for any history of Audi RS. Developed with Porsche, this high-performance estate delivered the combination that would become a recurring RS theme: practical bodywork with unusually serious performance. Audi says the first customers collected their cars in 1994. Its 2.2-liter five-cylinder produced 232 kW/315 hp, and Audi Tradition reports 2,908 cars over two years.

#1 Best Overall
Bburago 15621090R 1:24 Audi RS 5 Coupe (2019), Multicoloured
  • Highly detailed model of an Audi RS 5 Coupe
  • 1: 24 scale
  • Faithful recreation of the dashboard
  • The package dimension of the product is: 47.6"L x34.2"W x25"H

Its place on this list rests on influence and identity, not a claim that it outperforms later RS cars. The RS 2 made the fast estate a defining part of Audi’s performance story.

Audi RS 4 B5 (announced 2000): the independent RS program takes shape

The B5 RS 4 followed the RS 2’s estate formula but marked a shift in how Audi developed its performance cars. Audi describes it as the first car independently developed by quattro GmbH. Announced in May 2000, it went on sale in June and was offered only as an Avant. Its Cosworth-modified 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 produced 280 kW/380 hp. Audi Tradition reports 6,046 cars over 18 months.

Hot Wheels - '17 Audi RS 6 Avant - JJJ33 - HW Euro 2/10 - Short Card - Yellow - McLaren Hypercar - Official Licensed Model - Mattel 2026 (66/250) - 1:64
  • Detailed replica of the legendary Audi RS 6 Avant - high-performance estate with super sports car DNA
  • Distinctive RS front with large radiator grille and aggressive lines
  • Sporty black performance rims as a strong contrast to the body
  • Typical Avant design: wide silhouette, long roof line and powerful proportions
  • Part of the HW Euro Series 2026 - 2/10 - Focus on modern European top vehicles. 66/250 of the 2026 Hot Wheels Mainline - fixed serial number with collector potential

The RS 4 B5 earns its place as a bridge: it carried forward the fast-estate concept while establishing a more self-directed RS development program.

The RS 6 and the high-performance executive car

Audi RS 6 C5 (2002): a flagship in two body styles

The first RS 6 broadened the formula beyond estates. Audi introduced the C5 generation in 2002 as both a sedan and an Avant, with a 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 rated at 331 kW/450 PS. Audi Communications gives its 0–100 km/h time as 4.7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h.

Its significance is the pairing of executive-car discretion and everyday practicality with serious acceleration. The C5 also introduced Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), an RS-specific hydraulic system designed to compensate for pitch and roll. The RS 6 made that blend a recurring flagship idea rather than a one-off experiment.

Four generations of RS 6: a lasting formula, not a single body style

Audi’s 2022 retrospective covers four RS 6 generations, from C5 to C8, and describes performance with everyday usability as central to the model’s concept. The story moves from the original sedan-and-Avant offering toward a later Avant-centered identity. Specifications and availability vary by market, so the German-market details in Audi’s history should not be assumed to apply everywhere.

How the RS family grew beyond estates

Audi’s 40-year retrospective names RS 3, RS 4, RS 5, TT RS, RS 6, RS 7, RS Q3, RS Q8 and RS e-tron GT among the family. The list shows why there is no single body style or role that defines every RS: the badge has appeared on compact cars, coupes and sportbacks, SUVs, estates and an electric grand tourer.

That portfolio is useful context, but it is historical evidence of the family’s reach—not proof that every model is currently available to order in every country. Local lineups, trims and specifications depend on market and model year.

Which Audi RS model is the most iconic?

For the origin of the lineage and the fast-estate identity, the RS 2 is the clearest choice. For the evolution toward an Audi-developed RS program, the B5 RS 4 is the pivotal model. For the combination of executive-car pace, multiple body styles at launch and a distinctive suspension technology, the first RS 6 stands out. “Most iconic” therefore depends on what part of RS history matters most to the reader.

Which Audi RS models are wagons?

The RS 2 and B5 RS 4 in this shortlist were Avants—Audi’s estate body style. The first RS 6 was offered as both sedan and Avant. Across later generations, the RS 6 story became increasingly associated with the Avant, although the exact body-style lineup depends on generation and market. RS models also include non-estate formats such as compact cars, sportbacks and SUVs.

How to choose a “best” RS for your interests

  • Choose by historical significance: start with the RS 2, then compare the B5 RS 4 as the next major step in the program.
  • Choose by performance-estate character: focus on the RS 2, RS 4 Avant and RS 6 Avant, while keeping generation and market differences in view.
  • Choose by engineering milestone: the RS 6 C5 is notable for introducing DRC alongside its twin-turbo V8.
  • Choose by body style: look beyond estates to the broader RS portfolio, including compact models, sportbacks, SUVs and the RS e-tron GT.

These comparisons identify historical roles, not a reliability ranking, ownership-cost verdict or used-car recommendation. The cited production and acceleration figures are model facts, not proof that one RS is objectively superior.
