No single Hyundai Santa Fe model year is established as the definitive reliability winner by the available evidence. Published rankings differ, and the Consumer Reports results available for selected years are not a complete comparison. Treat year-based lists as starting points: compare the vehicle’s generation and powertrain, review its history, inspect its condition, and check open recalls by VIN.
What the available reliability evidence says
Two kinds of evidence offer useful but limited signals: complaint-based analyses and Consumer Reports’ survey-based reliability results. Neither provides a complete, directly comparable ranking of every Santa Fe year and configuration.
Complaint-based rankings flag several years, but do not prove failure rates
CarWhere says it analyzed 5,497 complaints using a method that weights severity, adjusts for time on the road, compares model years within the Santa Fe line, and accounts for recalls. Its October 2026 analysis flags 2008, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2022, 2023, and 2024 as higher-risk years. These are CarWhere’s results under its own method, not a universal verdict that every vehicle from those years is unreliable.
ForCar reports 6,947 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for Santa Fe model years 2001–2026, updated September 19, 2026. Complaints are reports from owners, not confirmed failures. A raw total also does not show the chance that a particular vehicle will have a problem, because it is not a failure-rate calculation that consistently accounts for sales volume, age, severity, or exposure.

Consumer Reports provides selected-year signals, not a winner
Consumer Reports describes the 2018 and 2024 Santa Fe as less reliable than other vehicles from the same model year, while its surfaced result for 2020 is about average. These are selected examples, not a year-by-year comparison, so the average result for 2020 does not establish it as the best year. Consumer Reports says its reliability history draws on subscriber surveys covering 20 potential trouble spots and about 380,000 vehicles; that is the stated scope of its survey, not a Santa Fe-only sample.
Why a model year alone is not enough
A Santa Fe’s reliability depends on more than the year on its registration. Generation, engine, transmission, trim, drivetrain, maintenance, mileage, and the individual vehicle’s condition all matter. A year-level ranking cannot tell you whether a particular used Santa Fe has been maintained well or has a developing fault.

Use any published shortlist as a prompt for closer checks, not as a substitute for evidence about the vehicle you are considering. Compare candidates with the same generation and configuration where possible, and pay attention to how a source reached its rating: owner complaints, survey responses, and other rating methods do not measure the same thing.

How to evaluate a used Santa Fe before buying
- Identify the exact vehicle. Confirm its model year, generation, engine, transmission, trim, and drivetrain. Use those details to compare like with like rather than relying on the Santa Fe name alone.
- Review maintenance and repair records. Look for a consistent service history and documentation of significant repairs. Ask the seller about any gaps or unresolved problems.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the vehicle’s condition before you commit. An inspection can help uncover issues that a model-year rating cannot address.
- Check recalls using the VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup to see whether that specific vehicle has an unrepaired recall. NHTSA distinguishes VIN-specific unrepaired-recall results from broader information about recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications by year, make, and model.
- Confirm any campaign remedy was completed. A Hyundai campaign filed with NHTSA identifies certain 2013–2015 Santa Fe Sport vehicles in an ABS-module campaign; another campaign document describes ABS-fuse replacement remedies for listed vehicles. Applicability is specific to affected vehicles, not every Santa Fe Sport from those years. Check the VIN and verify completion rather than assuming the vehicle is included or repaired.
- Use a code reader only as a screening aid. An OBD2 reader may reveal stored diagnostic codes, but a clean scan does not establish overall condition and cannot replace a mechanic’s inspection or a VIN-based recall check.
How to use year lists without overreading them
- Ask whether the list names its publisher and explains its method. CarWhere’s flagged years, for example, come from its severity-weighted complaint analysis.
- Do not treat complaint counts as confirmed defects or as the odds that your vehicle will fail.
- Do not infer a best year from an average rating or from the absence of a year in a limited list.
- Give more weight to the specific vehicle’s service records, inspection findings, mileage, condition, configuration, and recall status when making a purchase decision.
