What the headline payment leaves out
A low monthly figure can conceal a sizable upfront payment. To compare leases, calculate the scheduled payments plus the amount due at signing, then account for any disclosed taxes and fees. Also check the annual mileage allowance, excess-mile charge, lease-end fees, credit qualifications, and loyalty or conquest conditions. The roundup did not provide all of those terms for every offer, so the monthly figures alone do not establish a complete lease cost.
A BMW example reported by BMW of Gwinnett Place illustrates why itemization matters: its $449 monthly payment was based on a $7,500 Lease Credit, a $2,850 suggested dealer contribution, a $3,495 capitalized-cost reduction, the first monthly payment, and an acquisition fee. It specified a 30,000-mile total allowance and a per-mile excess charge. These are details for that particular offer, not terms that can be assumed for the other vehicles. BMW of Gwinnett Place.

The roundup reported configuration-specific range figures of 149 miles for the LEAF S 40 kWh, 253 miles for the Niro EV Wind, 303 miles for the IONIQ 5 RWD example, and 310 miles for the Kia EV6 Light Long Range RWD. These are source-reported figures, not independent test results. Match any range figure to the exact configuration, and consider your regular routes and charging access alongside the lease price. For a higher-priced contrast, GM Authority reported nationwide August 2024 offers of $849 per month for 36 months with $4,800 due at signing for the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup 2X, and $899 per month for 36 months with $7,240 due at signing for the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV 2X. Those examples were not under $250 per month; they show that “best” depends on the vehicle and payment a shopper is evaluating. GM Authority.

How to read EV tax-credit and lease-bonus claims
A purchase-credit eligibility table is not proof that an individual lessee receives a tax credit, nor does it show how much a lessor passed through to a specific contract. The IRS 2024 table lists the 2024 Nissan LEAF S and SV PLUS with a $3,750 credit amount and a $55,000 applicable MSRP limit. It lists eligible 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV and several Volkswagen ID.4 configurations with $7,500 amounts and an $80,000 limit. Those entries describe the table’s purchase-credit eligibility information; they should not be treated as an automatic personal benefit for a lessee. Internal Revenue Service.
Lease offers may instead include a lease-specific bonus or credit embedded in the deal. Volkswagen of America’s offer terms stated: “EV Lease Bonus applied towards lease contract and is not redeemable for cash.” The wording describes that offer’s terms, not a general rule for every lease. An August 2023 Energy Innovation modeled study examined EV and gasoline vehicle costs across all 50 states. It found that, for most models evaluated, leasing an EV had a lower modeled monthly cost than leasing a comparable gasoline vehicle or buying an EV or gasoline vehicle; some comparisons were up to $500 per month cheaper. The report attributed part of the modeled savings to a $7,500 leased-EV tax credit and said many, but not all, dealers passed credit savings through to customers.
