For U.S. shoppers looking at new sports cars under $50,000, the strongest starting points are the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86. The Miata is a two-seat roadster; the BRZ and GR86 are rear-wheel-drive coupes with small rear seats and more cargo utility. This guide covers that entry-price range and a few alternatives approaching $50,000—not every budget category, because current higher-price model and trim data is not established here.
Best sports cars under $50,000 at a glance
| Model | Published price reference | What stands out | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata | $30,430 for Sport 6MT soft top, Mazda North American Operations’ listed MSRP; destination/handling is separate. | Two-seat roadster; 181 hp and 151 lb-ft, according to Mazda. | Drivers who want an open-top, lightweight two-seater and a manual option. |
| 2026 Subaru BRZ | $30,095 starting price on Subaru’s model page; destination-charge basis should be confirmed locally. | Rear-wheel-drive coupe; 228 hp, according to Subaru. | Shoppers who want a fixed roof, rear seats and a driver-focused coupe. |
| 2026 Toyota GR86 | Price is unresolved: Car and Driver lists $32,695, while a Toyota-affiliated listing shows $35,100 base MSRP. Confirm with Toyota’s current configurator or a local dealer. | Car and Driver highlights its sharp steering and chassis tuning. | Coupe shoppers comparing it directly with the BRZ. |
| 2026 Ford Mustang | Car and Driver’s under-$50,000 ranking lists it from $34,990; verify current trim and destination details. | More power- and comfort-oriented appeal than the small roadsters and coupes, according to an AP-republished Edmunds guide. | Drivers who want a larger, more traditional American performance car. |
| 2026 BMW 2-Series | Car and Driver lists it from $43,550; verify current trim and destination details. | Listed as an under-$50,000 alternative by Car and Driver. | Shoppers considering a premium-brand option near the top of this range. |
| 2027 Nissan Z | Car and Driver lists it from $45,805; verify current trim and destination details. | Listed by Car and Driver among sports cars under $50,000. | Shoppers whose budget approaches the cap and who want to consider another coupe. |
The table mixes manufacturer-listed prices with a publication’s ranking-page prices, which may use different price bases. Treat them as starting references, not comparable out-the-door quotes. Dealer pricing, destination, options, taxes and fees can change what a specific car costs.
Which affordable sports car should you choose?
Choose the Miata for a two-seat roadster
The 2026 Miata is the clearest choice here if an open-top, two-seat layout is the point. Mazda North American Operations lists the Sport 6MT soft top at $30,430 MSRP. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder is rated by Mazda at 181 hp at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm, with a 7,500-rpm redline. Sport and Club trims are manual-only; Grand Touring is available with a manual or automatic. The retractable-fastback RF roof opens or closes in about 13 seconds, according to Mazda. Mazda’s 2026 pricing and packaging release lists these specifications and trim prices.
Mazda says the Miata’s MSRP increased by $300 effective September 15, 2026, and destination/handling became $1,315—or $1,360 in Alaska—effective August 11, 2026. Existing dealer inventory with window labels is excluded from the MSRP adjustment. Because those changes are recent, check the current local quote and window sticker rather than assuming every car on a lot reflects the same price basis.

Choose the BRZ or GR86 for a fixed-roof coupe
The BRZ and GR86 provide a different shape of practicality: both are two-door, rear-wheel-drive coupes, and their small rear seats and cargo area make them more useful for belongings or occasional passengers than the Miata. An AP-republished Edmunds guide describes the rear seats as cramped, so they should not be treated as adult-friendly full-time seating. The same guide characterizes the BRZ and GR86 as close alternatives with rear-drive layouts and more passenger and cargo space than the Miata. Read the AP-republished Edmunds comparison; its 2025 prices are historical and are not used here as current prices.
Subaru describes the 2026 BRZ as a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe with a 2.4-liter boxer engine rated at 228 hp. Subaru also highlights quick-ratio steering and a track-tuned chassis; the tS trim has STI-tuned suspension. Its model page states a $30,095 starting price, but check the destination-charge basis and your local build quote. Subaru’s 2026 BRZ page has the manufacturer’s current model information.

The GR86 is a natural alternative to the BRZ, but the available price references conflict: Car and Driver’s ranking lists $32,695, while a Toyota-affiliated 2026 listing surfaced $35,100 as base MSRP. The difference is not reconciled here, so use the current Toyota configurator and a local quote before budgeting around either figure. Car and Driver praises the GR86’s steering and chassis tuning in its under-$50,000 ranking; a Toyota-affiliated 2026 listing provides the higher price reference.
Consider the Mustang, 2-Series or Nissan Z near the budget ceiling
Car and Driver’s current ranking includes the 2026 Mustang from $34,990, the 2026 BMW 2-Series from $43,550, and the 2027 Nissan Z from $45,805. These are ranking-page starting prices; confirm model year, trim, destination and local availability before treating them as purchase quotes. The AP-republished Edmunds guide frames the Mustang as a more traditional American driving experience with greater comfort, equipment and power-oriented appeal than the Miata, BRZ and GR86. Car and Driver’s rankings are that publication’s editorial judgments, not a universal ordering or an objective measure of which car is best.

How to compare prices without being misled
- Choose a specific trim and transmission. Compare like with like: a soft-top Miata Sport 6MT is not the same configuration as an RF Grand Touring automatic.
- Check what the listed price includes. Mazda separately identifies destination/handling. For the BRZ and other ranking-page prices, verify destination treatment rather than assuming it is included.
- Ask for the full local purchase quote. Add options, taxes and fees, and account for dealer pricing or incentives. A starting MSRP is not the out-the-door price.
- Confirm the exact car and price basis. Use a current manufacturer configurator or a written dealer quote, especially when published references conflict or a page may have changed.
Match the car to how you will use it
- Passenger and cargo needs: The Miata has two seats. The BRZ and GR86 add rear seats and cargo utility, but their rear seats are cramped.
- Roof and weather exposure: The Miata’s soft top and RF offer open-air driving; the BRZ and GR86 are fixed-roof coupes.
- Transmission preference: Mazda lists the Miata Sport and Club as manual-only, while Grand Touring offers manual and automatic choices. Check the exact transmission offered on any other trim you consider.
- Driving character: The Miata’s appeal is a two-seat roadster format; the BRZ and GR86 pair coupe bodies with rear-wheel drive. The Mustang is the alternative to consider if comfort, equipment and a more power-oriented character matter more.
What this guide covers—and what it does not
This is a U.S. new-car guide to the entry-price segment and selected alternatives under roughly $50,000, using 2026 model information where available and a 2027 Nissan Z entry from Car and Driver’s ranking. It is not a complete ranking for $50,000–$100,000 or above $100,000: current primary-source prices and specifications for those categories are not established in the cited material. Prices and availability can vary by trim, destination, region and dealer, so verify the exact model year and local quote before buying.
