The C4 Corvette (1984–1996) is generally the cheapest generation to shop: a July 2026 Corvetteforum guide places budget C4s at $8,000–$15,000, below its budget bands for the other seven generations. That is a guide range, not a guaranteed price or a claim that every C4 is inexpensive. Condition, mileage, history, and rarity can change the answer for an individual car.
How do the eight Corvette generations compare on budget?
Corvetteforum’s July 6, 2026 guide gives the following budget-buy ranges. They describe typical lower-cost examples, not fixed transaction prices.

Why does the C4 come out cheapest?
Its ordinary budget examples are older and often have more miles or cosmetic wear than newer generations, while the older C1 and C2 generations command much higher budget ranges. C3s can overlap with C4 prices at the low end, but the guide’s C3 range starts at $15,000, compared with $8,000 for a C4.

A separate early-2026 Corvetteforum article estimates 1992–1996 base C4s at $10,000–$15,000. That does not conflict with the July guide’s $8,000–$15,000 range: the latter’s cheapest examples skew toward earlier 1984–1991 cars. The same separate article puts early C5s at $15,000–$20,000 and 2005–2007 base C6s at $18,000–$25,000. These are estimates for different model years and configurations, not one uniform price list. What do listings and sales say about actual prices?
Individual listings and auction results show why no single number defines the cheapest Corvette. Backlist.io Market showed a $7,000 asking price for a 1995 Corvette with 155,768 miles and recorded a $6,900 sale for a 1995 coupe with 102,000 miles on September 23, 2026. Those are individual examples, not a generation average or a guarantee that a comparable car is available near you. The same platform reported a $10,750 median C4 auction price from 535 tracked sales, based on Bring a Trailer and PCARMARKET results tracked since 2016. That is a platform sample, not a nationwide valuation.

Prices can also cross generation lines: Hagerty Marketplace reported a $10,593 sale for a 1981 C3 on September 23, 2026. VIN Assessment reported 14,501 active listings across 46 Corvette model years in 2026; its national dealer asking-price figures were updated September 11 and are asking prices, not completed sales. These figures come from different evidence types and should not be blended into a precise average. A Hagerty Marketplace listing and sales search can show current examples, but a live, location-specific inventory check is necessary to identify the lowest currently available car.
How should you choose between a cheap C4 and another generation?
Use the generation range to set an initial budget, then evaluate the specific car. A lower purchase price does not establish better value; a neglected car may need work that changes the total cost of ownership.

- Condition and records: Look for service documentation and evidence that maintenance has been kept up.
- Mileage and use: Budget examples often have higher mileage; weigh that against the car’s history and condition rather than treating mileage alone as a verdict.
- Trim and originality: Rare ZR-1, Grand Sport, low-mileage, or otherwise collectible cars can sit well outside ordinary-generation budget ranges.
- Inspection results: Have a qualified professional assess the particular car before committing.
What should you check before buying a cheap C4?
Arrange a pre-purchase inspection and review the car’s history before purchase. A C4-specific inspection guide recommends checking service records, power accessories and displays, leaks, suspension, exhaust, corrosion, evidence of collision damage, tires, and diagnostic codes. Depending on the car’s age and condition, a professional may also recommend a compression test. A broader inspection checklist describes a lift inspection, fluid checks, OBD-II scan, and written report as possible parts of a professional PPI. The exact scope should be agreed with the inspector; a checklist cannot establish that a particular car is sound.

Their listing does not establish current availability, edition status, or price. The C4 pre-purchase inspection guide is useful for inspection categories, but its older repair-cost figures should not be treated as current estimates.

Which years count as each Corvette generation?
The commonly used generation dates are C1 1953–1962, C2 1963–1967, C3 1968–1982, C4 1984–1996, C5 1997–2004, C6 2005–2013, C7 2014–2019, and C8 2020–present. Chevrolet skipped the 1983 model year in the retail production sequence, so 1983 is not a normal model-year choice in the C4 range. The generation definitions are listed by Hagerty Marketplace.
Historical launch prices adjusted for inflation answer a different question from current used prices. For example, Corvetteforum’s inflation comparison gives C4 base-price equivalents of $68,167–$77,093 in 2026 dollars; those are inflation-adjusted original prices, not used-car values.
