Which new BMW 3 Series sedan is the better value?
Start with the 330i if you want a premium sport sedan without paying for the M340i’s larger performance step. BMW describes the 2026 330i as having a 255-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The 2026 M340i has a 386-hp 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. What do the published fuel-economy figures say?
BMW’s technical-data page lists 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway for the 330i automatic, and 26 mpg city and 34 mpg highway for the 330i xDrive. Those are figures on BMW’s technical-data page, not a substitute for checking the final EPA rating for the exact model and configuration: BMW’s separate 2026 overview currently labels fuel economy preliminary and TBA. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists the 330i at 29 mpg combined in its specifications table, alongside an eight-speed automatic and 255 horsepower. That guide figure is not identified here as EPA-certified, so do not treat it as an official EPA rating without checking the EPA listing for the specific car. How should you choose between rear-wheel drive and xDrive?
BMW’s published figures show a fuel-economy difference between the 330i automatic and 330i xDrive, but they do not determine whether all-wheel drive is worth choosing for a particular driver. Compare the exact vehicles’ prices and equipment, then weigh the conditions in which you drive and whether you want xDrive. Check the configuration carefully: BMW lists different economy figures for the two versions, and final EPA ratings should be confirmed for the specific model.
Is a used BMW 3 Series sedan from a particular year the best bargain?
No single used model year can be called the best bargain from the available evidence. A collection of listings or a general buying guide cannot establish a nationwide year-by-year winner, especially when asking prices and vehicle condition vary. The 3 Series sedan was redesigned for the 2019 model year, according to IIHS’s 2026 BMW 3 Series sedan rating page, but that fact alone does not make 2019, or any later year, the best buy.

Compare the car in front of you, not just its model year
When evaluating nearby used examples, compare:
- Asking price against other local cars with similar mileage, condition, drivetrain, and equipment.
- Mileage and the results of an independent inspection.
- Options and drivetrain, including whether the car has xDrive.
- Title and accident history.
- Service records and any gaps in documented maintenance.
A lower asking price may reflect condition, history, equipment, or other differences. The listing price alone cannot establish that a car is a better value. Ask for records and have the specific vehicle inspected before deciding.
What do the 3 Series safety ratings cover?
IIHS says the sedan was redesigned for 2019, but the model years covered differ by test. Its rating page lists small-overlap ratings for 2019–2026; the updated moderate-overlap front rating shown applies to 2025–2026; and the updated side rating shown applies only to 2026. What else belongs in a value comparison?
Purchase price is only one part of the decision. Compare the 330i and M340i on power, fuel consumption, standard and optional equipment, and whether you need xDrive. Also set a budget for insurance and maintenance, then obtain estimates for the specific vehicles you are considering. BMW’s specifications help compare output and drivetrain, but they do not establish total ownership costs or repair costs by model year.
For any used car, verify its current asking price, equipment, recall status by VIN, and service history. Market prices and available inventory vary by location and date; an older or general listing page cannot stand in for current local comparisons.
