Ford also announced a supercharged Coyote projected at 800+ hp and 615 lb-ft, and a Megazilla 2.0 projected at more than 1,000 hp. These were manufacturer projections in Ford’s January 30, 2025 announcement, not results from a comparative independent test. Ford described Megazilla 2.0 as competition use only and the supercharged Coyote as street-legal with an available two-year/24,000-mile limited warranty. What “bang for your buck” should include
A crate engine’s listed price is only one part of its value. Before choosing, build a parts-and-labor estimate for the exact vehicle and intended use. Check whether the quote includes:
- Intake and throttle body
- Exhaust manifolds or headers
- Fuel-system components
- Controller, wiring harness, and sensors
- Front-end accessory drive and brackets
- Oil pan suited to the chassis
- Transmission interface, engine mounts, and installation kit
- Shipping, taxes, and installation labor
Then compare output only where the exact engine configuration and rating are clear. Chevrolet’s catalog lists family-level maxima—including up to 523 hp for L8P, 650 hp for LT4, 455 hp for LT1, 638 hp for LS3, 627 hp for LSX, 420 hp for the 350 family, 450 hp for the 383 family, and up to 1,004 hp for the 632 family. Those are family-level maxima, not guaranteed ratings for every configuration or proof that the packages include equivalent parts. Check fitment and road-use rules before buying
Do not infer that a crate engine is road-legal for a particular vehicle from its brand or horsepower rating. The L8T listing cited here states “competition use only.” Mopar’s catalog warns that designated items are “Not legal on pollution-controlled vehicle or vehicle registered for highway use.” These are product-specific cautions, not blanket rules for every Chevrolet or Mopar crate engine. Legal eligibility depends on the exact engine, vehicle, model year, configuration, and jurisdiction; confirm those details with the manufacturer and the relevant emissions authority before purchase.
Fitment also determines whether a low listed price remains attractive. Oil-pan clearance, accessory-drive space, transmission compatibility, engine controls, fuel delivery, and exhaust routing vary by vehicle. The cited listings do not identify your donor vehicle, so none establishes that a particular engine will drop in or what conversion parts it will require.

- Define the build. Record the donor vehicle, model year, transmission, intended road or competition use, and any power or torque target.
- Confirm eligibility and fitment. Check the exact part number with the manufacturer or a qualified installer, and verify the rules that apply to the vehicle and jurisdiction.
- Get a complete parts list. Ask the seller to identify included and excluded controls, sensors, accessories, mounts, transmission components, and installation parts.
- Compare written, delivered estimates. Include freight, taxes, required parts, and labor. Treat catalog MSRP and a seller-displayed price as distinct figures, not as interchangeable quotes.
- Compare like with like. Use output figures only when the configuration and rating are identified; label family maxima and manufacturer projections rather than treating them as equivalent tested ratings.
