Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a well-supported starting point, look at the 2025 Subaru Forester: every trim has standard Symmetrical AWD and at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance. If rough gravel, forest roads and mild dirt access roads are a regular part of your plans, the 2025 Forester Wilderness adds 9.2 inches of clearance and enhanced dual-function X-MODE. Those specifications make the Forester a credible shortlist, not a proven winner across the whole market: the available comparisons do not establish comparable prices, fuel economy, cargo capacity or independent road-test results for a broad field.
For snow, trails and everyday driving, judge the exact model year and trim on winter equipment, clearance and daily practicality. AWD can help a vehicle get moving, but it does not by itself ensure braking or cornering grip on snow. And “trails” here means maintained or light-use roads—not rock crawling or deep mud, for which a dedicated 4WD vehicle may be more appropriate.
What the available evidence says about the leading candidates
The evidence supports two distinct Forester choices and one safety reference point, rather than a definitive ranking of AWD SUVs. Subaru’s specifications make the regular 2025 Forester the better-evidenced all-round starting point and the Wilderness the more trail-oriented Forester configuration. The Honda Passport has a current model-year safety award, but the available specifications are not enough to compare its winter and trail capability with the Forester’s.
| Vehicle and model year | What is established | What it means for this use |
|---|---|---|
| Subaru Forester, 2025 | Subaru says all trims have standard Symmetrical AWD and at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Available dual-function X-MODE has settings for dirt, snow, deep snow and mud. IIHS lists the 2025 Forester as a Top Safety Pick, excluding Wilderness trim. | A strong evidence-based starting point for mixed daily driving and light-road use. X-MODE settings are not a guarantee of traction. |
| Subaru Forester Wilderness, 2025 | Subaru lists standard Symmetrical AWD, 9.2 inches of ground clearance and enhanced dual-function X-MODE. The 2025 IIHS Forester Top Safety Pick entry explicitly excludes this trim. | The more trail-oriented of these two Forester configurations for rough gravel and mild dirt roads. Do not assume the standard Forester safety award applies to Wilderness. |
| Honda Passport, 2026 | IIHS lists the 2026 Passport as a Top Safety Pick+. The available Honda product-page information is for the 2027 model, not the 2026 model. | A relevant safety comparison, but the evidence here does not establish enough model-year-specific winter or trail specifications to rank it against either Forester. |
| Subaru Forester, 2026 | IIHS lists the 2026 Forester among Top Safety Pick+ vehicles. | A current model-year safety result; it does not establish that the 2025 specifications in this guide carry over to the 2026 model. |
The figures and equipment above are manufacturer specifications, while the safety distinctions come from IIHS’s model-year listings. They are not results from a head-to-head vehicle test.

How to choose for snow, trails and daily driving
For winter roads, compare more than the AWD badge
AWD describes how power can reach the wheels; it does not mean a vehicle can stop or turn reliably on a slippery surface. Check the exact trim’s tires, available winter-oriented drive settings, visibility features and safety equipment, and consider the winter conditions you actually encounter. Subaru describes available dual-function X-MODE settings for dirt, snow, deep snow and mud on the 2025 Forester. Those are selectable vehicle settings, not a substitute for suitable tires or careful driving.
For light trails, start with the road and the clearance
Rough gravel, maintained forest roads and mild dirt access roads place different demands on a vehicle than rocks, deep ruts or deep mud. The 2025 Forester’s listed clearance is 8.7 inches or more, and the Wilderness is listed at 9.2 inches. That makes clearance a concrete point of comparison, but it does not establish approach or departure angles, underbody protection, tire suitability or recovery equipment. Check those details for the exact trim if your route includes obstacles; do not treat a higher clearance figure or a terrain mode as proof that a vehicle is ready for technical off-roading.

For everyday driving, confirm the compromises yourself
A trail-oriented trim may suit rougher access roads, but the evidence available here does not establish whether it is the better daily driver. Before choosing, compare current, same-year figures for fuel economy, cargo space, price and passenger needs, and drive the vehicle on ordinary roads to assess comfort, noise and maneuverability. Those comparisons matter as much as clearance if the SUV will spend most of its time commuting or carrying family and gear.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the safety awards do—and do not—tell you
IIHS’s awards are tied to a specific model year and eligibility. The 2025 Forester listing excludes Wilderness, while the 2026 Forester and 2026 Passport appear on IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ list. An award for one year or trim should not be generalized to every version of the model, and it does not settle which vehicle is best for snow or trails.

Verify the exact year, trim and accessories before buying
- Confirm that AWD is standard or available on the specific trim you are considering.
- Check the manufacturer’s clearance and terrain-mode specifications for that same model year; do not carry a Wilderness specification over to other Forester trims.
- Review the relevant IIHS listing for the exact year and trim eligibility.
- For roof platforms or crossbars, verify vehicle year, trim, manufacturer fitment and load capacity. Honda’s current Passport product page presents 2027 model information and describes a roof platform/crossbar option; that does not establish fitment for other years or trims.
- If your intended route goes beyond maintained or light-use roads, assess the vehicle’s underbody protection, geometry, tires and recovery provisions rather than relying on AWD alone.
