The trucks are not operating without a person in the cab: Volvo says an observer currently sits in the driver’s seat.
What the Texas operation does
Announced on October 5, 2026, the service carries Warp freight between Dallas and Houston in Volvo VNL Autonomous trucks powered by Waabi Driver. Volvo describes the operation as delivering freight to third-party facilities along the corridor, extending beyond a hub-to-hub model. The launch announcement identifies Warp as the customer, but does not name the facilities or individual shippers.
Warp is described by Volvo as an open-source freight network serving carriers and shippers with less-than-truckload (LTL) and full-truckload (FTL) services. The partners characterize this as their first customer deployment together. Are the trucks driverless?
No. The current operation has an observer in the driver’s seat, according to Volvo. That distinction matters: this is freight service using autonomous driving technology, but it is not yet operation with no person in the seat.

Axios reports that the partners intend eventually to operate without a human in the driver’s seat and to add routes. Neither report gives a date for removing the observer or a timetable for expansion, so those remain future intentions rather than announced milestones. Axios’ report on the launch
How Volvo, Waabi and Warp fit together
The operation combines more than the truck and its automated-driving system. Volvo says its Autona/freight offering brings together the VNL Autonomous, partner autonomy technology, transport and fleet management, terminals, customer endpoints, operating services and uptime support. In this deployment, Waabi Driver supplies the driving technology and Warp provides the freight network through which loads are served.

The notable operational detail is that freight is being delivered to third-party facilities on a named corridor, rather than the announcement describing only movement between dedicated hubs. It is evidence of a customer operation, not a public accounting of its scale or results.
