A collection left in a Los Angeles scrapyard for decades became one of 2024’s most closely watched collector-car auctions. The contrast is striking: cars RM Sotheby’s described as stored in original or “as is” condition drew multimillion-dollar bids—not because neglect itself made them valuable, but because rare survivors, their histories and their long-hidden setting converged in public view.
Who was Rudi Klein, and how did the collection form?
Rudi Klein arrived in North America from Germany in the late 1950s. He began as a butcher and founded his scrapyard business, Porche Foreign Auto, in 1967. RM Sotheby’s says that, while operating on the outskirts of Los Angeles, Klein spent decades collecting significant European cars. After he died in 2001, his family kept the collection as he had left it. The auction house said many vehicles had remained unseen by the public or by current generations. What was in Rudi Klein’s junkyard?
The collection included rare prewar European automobiles, postwar sports cars and prototypes. Four headline cars show why the sale drew attention for more than the spectacle of finding valuable vehicles in a scrapyard.
| Car | What RM Sotheby’s said made it notable | Reported sale price |
|---|---|---|
| 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Alloy” Gullwing | RM Sotheby’s described it as one of 29 alloy-bodied Gullwings, the only example originally finished in black over red leather, and formerly owned by Luigi Chinetti. | $9,355,000 |
| 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500 K “Caracciola” Special Coupe | The auction house described it as a one-off built for racing driver Rudolf Caracciola. It noted that the car came with its original build sheet bearing Caracciola’s name. | $4,130,000 |
| 1939 Horch 855 Special Roadster | RM Sotheby’s described it as the sole surviving production Horch 855. The car appeared in the September 1954 issue of Road & Track and alongside Rock Hudson in The World Is Ours. | $3,305,000 |
| 1964 Iso Grifo A3/L Spider Prototype | The auction house described it as a factory-built convertible prototype used for publicity photographs. | $1,875,000 |
All prices in the table are amounts reported by RM Sotheby’s in its results release; they are not a statement of final buyer costs. The rarity, ownership and historical descriptions are the auction house’s, not claims of independent verification. RM Sotheby’s auction results

Why were the Rudi Klein cars worth so much?
The auction’s headline results reflected a combination of features collectors often care about: rarity, documented history, cultural visibility and the chance to acquire a car that had been largely out of public view. The Alloy Gullwing, for example, brought together an unusual body specification, a distinctive original color combination and a previous owner identified by the auction house. The Caracciola coupe’s association with the racing driver was reinforced by its reported original build sheet. The Horch’s history included both a magazine appearance and a film role.
Those details help explain the attention, but they do not establish that exposure to the elements or a “junkyard” setting caused the prices. Nor do a handful of standout results prove a general rise in collector-car values. RM Sotheby’s reported $1,325,000 for a 1968 Lamborghini Miura P400, $967,500 for a 1969 P400 S and $610,000 for a 1967 P400; without a broader market dataset, those individual outcomes should be read as results for those specific cars, not as a trend.
How much did the Rudi Klein auction make?
RM Sotheby’s reported total sales of $29,616,400 and said 100% of lots sold. In its 28 October 2024 release, the auction house also reported bidders from 39 countries and 36 U.S. states, with nearly one-third of participants bidding for the first time. The sale followed an announcement in August 2024. RM Sotheby’s scheduled the live sale for 26 October; its online sale opened that day and was expected to close on 28 October. What does “as is” mean for the cars’ condition?
RM Sotheby’s said some cars sat in the California sun, covered or exposed to the elements, and that Klein’s family preserved the collection after 2001 in original or “as is” condition. Those descriptions evoke long storage and deterioration, but they do not tell a buyer whether an individual car is complete, mechanically sound, authentic in every detail or safe to drive. “Untouched” is not the same as intact or roadworthy.
The auction’s online bidder terms placed responsibility for due diligence on bidders, including checks of condition, originality, authenticity, history and descriptions. They stated that lots were sold “as is” and “where is,” without warranties. For the live sale, the bidder conditions also said the buyer assumed the risk of loss or damage immediately upon purchase. These are the terms for the 2024 sale, not a description of current auction policy. RM Sotheby’s online bidder terms RM Sotheby’s live-sale bidder conditions
For a buyer considering any comparable auction car, the practical lesson is to review the specific lot’s condition report and terms, arrange appropriate inspection where possible, and confirm transport, tax, title and insurance arrangements before bidding. Auction descriptions and evocative provenance can guide questions; they do not replace verification.

The Rudi Klein sale made a private collection visible at the point where neglect, survival and historical meaning meet. Its cars were not valuable simply because they had weathered time in a scrapyard. Their appeal lay in the identities and stories attached to particular survivors—and in the chance to see objects long withheld from public view. The “beauty of destruction” is therefore less a claim that ruin creates value than a way to describe the uneasy contrast between physical decay and the histories collectors sought to preserve.
