Among the three-row choices in this list, the Telluride has the lowest displayed starting figure at $8,500, ahead of the Sorento at $9,599 and Palisade at $9,750. Those page figures likewise should not be read as matched offers. Check local listings and compare vehicles with similar equipment and histories.
How much should you pay for a 2021 midsize SUV?
There is no single fair U.S. price for a 2021 midsize SUV without accounting for trim, mileage, condition, title history, drivetrain, region and sale channel. The amounts in this ranking are not transaction-price estimates. For a localized reference, Edmunds’ pricing methodology says its Suggested Price estimates average transaction prices using dealer data and regional conditions. Edmunds notes that the estimate excludes sales tax, license and registration, and dealer title and documentation fees, among other possible costs. Use it alongside current local listings and compare equivalent vehicles; budget separately for taxes and applicable fees.

Car and Driver says its vehicle rankings draw on roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and driving enjoyment. That breadth can help assess a model beyond its asking price, but a vehicle-ranking methodology is not a survey of used-car transactions. Its current used-SUV ranking also displays changing asking-price ranges for newer cohorts, underscoring why the figures should be checked again when shopping.

Seating layout is an important first filter: Telluride, Sorento, Palisade, CX-9 and Highlander are three-row candidates in this comparison; Grand Cherokee, Santa Fe and Passport are two-row choices. A third row can matter for regular passenger use, while a two-row layout may better suit buyers who do not need it. Confirm the exact vehicle’s seating and cargo arrangement, since the price ranking does not measure how well a particular cabin fits your passengers or gear.

For a broader safety-screened shortlist, the IIHS and Consumer Reports “Safe vehicles for teens” guide, updated May 27, 2026, includes the Mazda CX-9 (2020–23, built after December 2019), Nissan Murano (2021–25) and Ford Explorer (2020–24) in its midsize SUV section. Its Best Choices criteria combine IIHS crash-prevention and headlight performance with Consumer Reports thresholds for braking, handling and control/display usability. Its prices are not a 2021-only ranking: the guide reports Black Book median retail prices for all trims of the earliest eligible model year, based on April 2026 data and rounded to the nearest $100. For example, it lists $16,200 for the CX-9, referring to the earliest applicable year in its 2020–23 eligibility span, not an exact 2021 price.

What to check before buying
- Match the comparison. Compare vehicles with similar trim, mileage, drivetrain, condition, title status and equipment in your region. A difference in any of these can make a simple price rank misleading.
- Check the exact safety configuration. Look up the vehicle’s model year, headlights and relevant equipment in the IIHS record. A model-level award does not necessarily apply identically to every configuration.
- Check for open recalls by VIN. The IIHS/Consumer Reports guide advises checking outstanding recalls by VIN or license plate; it also notes NHTSA’s advice to check for new recalls about every six months.
- Review the vehicle’s history and condition. Ask for the history records and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection when appropriate. An award or a model’s reputation cannot establish the condition, maintenance or repair history of an individual SUV.
- Calculate the out-the-door cost. Add applicable taxes, registration and dealer charges to the vehicle price; an online price estimate may exclude some of them.
