A turbocharged engine can deliver more power from a given engine size by using exhaust flow to compress incoming air. In cars designed around a smaller turbocharged engine, that can also create the potential for better fuel economy in ordinary driving while preserving extra power for when it is needed. Neither benefit is automatic: the result depends on the vehicle, its engine tuning and the comparison being made.
What are the benefits of a turbocharged engine?
A turbocharger uses exhaust flow to force more air into the engine. With more air available for combustion, an engine can make more power than a naturally aspirated engine of the same size. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency puts it plainly: “An engine with a turbocharger can produce more power than an identically sized engine that is naturally aspirated or does not have a turbocharger.” (EPA 2025 Automotive Trends Report)
- More power from a given engine size: This is the direct benefit of adding a turbocharger; it does not by itself establish how quickly a particular car accelerates or how much it can tow.
- Potential to pair efficiency with reserve power: A manufacturer may use turbocharging to make a smaller engine that can provide useful power in everyday driving and more when required.
- Flexible engine design: Turbocharging gives automakers another way to balance power and fuel economy across a vehicle’s intended use.
Does a turbocharged car save fuel?
It can, particularly when a manufacturer uses a turbocharger to let a smaller engine replace a larger one while retaining power when needed. A smaller engine can have better fuel-economy potential during ordinary operation, but the actual result depends on the complete vehicle design and the comparison. EPA describes turbocharging as one approach that can allow a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine to replace a larger engine (EPA: Advanced Gasoline and Diesel Vehicles).
Turbocharging alone does not guarantee lower fuel consumption. Comparing unrelated cars—or even different trims of the same model—without considering their engine, weight, gearing and official fuel-economy ratings can lead to the wrong conclusion. The EPA’s finding that gasoline turbocharged engines represented more than 44% of U.S. vehicle production in model year 2024, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, describes how common the technology is; it is not a fuel-savings estimate for an individual car (EPA 2025 Automotive Trends Report).

Why the engine and comparison matter
There are two related but distinct ideas: a turbocharger can increase the power of an engine at a given displacement, and a manufacturer can choose a smaller turbocharged engine in place of a larger one. The first is a power-per-size advantage. The second is the strategy behind the potential fuel-economy benefit. Fuel use in real driving depends on how the engine and vehicle are designed and driven, so neither idea supports a universal savings figure.
Turbocharging can also increase the risk of engine knock, which is why octane requirements are engine-specific. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains the relationship between engine design, knock and demand for higher-octane gasoline (EIA: Engine design trends lead to increased demand for higher-octane gasoline). Follow the fuel grade in the owner’s manual or on the vehicle’s fuel label; do not assume every turbocharged car requires premium gasoline.

What to check before choosing a turbocharged car
Compare the full vehicle and engine package rather than relying on the word “turbocharged.” For the specific model year and trim, check:
- Rated power and torque: These show what the particular engine is designed to deliver; the turbo label alone does not establish acceleration or towing capability.
- Fuel economy: Use official ratings for the exact trim and model year, and compare them with the vehicle you would otherwise choose.
- Fuel grade: Confirm the required or recommended octane for that engine.
- Maintenance instructions: Read the model’s scheduled service requirements and recommended oil specifications.
- Your driving conditions: Consider whether your typical trips and driving demands suit the particular vehicle, rather than assuming a general turbo advantage will apply.
Maintenance advice is specific to the vehicle
Turbocharged engines do not have one universal maintenance rule or proven reliability ranking based on the evidence available here. Follow the manual for the particular car. For example, Mazda’s 2026 CX-90 owner’s manual says, “The turbocharger greatly enhances engine power,” and directs owners to follow scheduled maintenance and use the recommended oil. Those instructions apply to that model and should not be treated as a blanket rule for all turbocharged vehicles (Mazda 2026 CX-90 Owner’s Manual).
