What makes the FD2 my choice for best Civic Type R?
“Best” depends on what a driver values. This is a subjective choice, not a claim that the FD2 is objectively quicker or more capable than every Type R. I rank it first for the combination of a high-revving naturally aspirated engine, a six-speed manual, a distinctive four-door shape and a focus on driver involvement.
The FD2 represents a particular kind of performance car: a front-wheel-drive sedan built around an engine that rewards revs and a manual gearbox that keeps the driver involved. That character is the point of the choice. A newer turbocharged Type R may be a better fit for someone prioritizing newer technology or a different kind of performance; a hatchback may suit someone who needs that body style.
What was the FD2, and how did it differ from the FN2?
The FD2 was the Japan-market Civic Type R introduced for the 2007–2011 period. It was a four-door sedan, distinct from the contemporaneous FN2, the European-market Type R. They are not simply two names for the same car: market and body style separate the versions.

Honda’s Japanese factory specification lists the FD2 as model code ABA-FD2, powered by a 1,998 cc K20A inline-four and paired with a six-speed manual. It records a curb weight of 1,270 kg, seating for four and 225/40R18 tires. Was the FD2 Civic Type R sold in America?
No—not as an official new-car offering from Honda in the United States. Honda’s history identifies the FD2 as a Japan-market model and says the FK8, introduced in 2017, was the first Civic Type R sold in the U.S. Honda’s Civic Type R history.

That statement concerns Honda’s official sales, not whether an individual FD2 could ever enter the country through private import. The sources cited here do not establish current import, registration or state-level compliance rules, so check the relevant federal and state requirements before making plans to import one.
How does the FD2 fit into the Type R lineage?
Honda’s retrospective connects the FD2 era to later Type R development, but a manufacturer’s historical account is not a universal verdict on which generation is best. The comparison changes with the criteria: naturally aspirated or turbocharged power delivery, sedan or hatchback packaging, market intent, and whether the priority is engine character, everyday utility or outright performance.

Honda reported that about 13,400 Civic Type Rs were sold globally from 2007 to 2011, counting the FD2 and FN2 together. That is a combined figure, not an FD2-only production total. Honda Type R Timeline and Milestones (2022).

Who should consider an FD2?
The FD2 is the strongest fit for an enthusiast drawn to a Japanese-market sedan, a naturally aspirated K20A and a manual transmission—not simply someone looking for the newest or most convenient Civic Type R. Before evaluating a particular car, confirm its actual specification and condition. Factory figures describe the Japanese-market model; an individual car may have been modified, and the correct tire fitment depends on its wheels and configuration.
