Its star was a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, chassis 2935GT: Artcurial estimated it at €9.5 million to €12 million, then recorded a sale price of €16,288,000. The often-repeated “60 cars” and “untouched for 50 years” descriptions come from a December 2014 report, not a verified storage history for every vehicle.
What was the Baillon barn find?
The discovery was the Roger Baillon collection, reported in December 2014 as a group of 60 cars remaining on a farm in western France. New Atlas said Artcurial specialists Matthieu Lamoure and Pierre Novikoff were called in to assess the collection. Its headline described the cars as “untouched for 50 years,” but that is the contemporary report’s framing; it does not establish that each car had spent the same length of time in storage.
Artcurial Motorcars managing director Matthieu Lamoure compared the find with the revelation of the Schlumpf Collection, calling the cars emblematic and in original condition. That was his assessment as an auction-house executive involved in the sale, not an independent ranking of historic discoveries.
Which car made the headlines?
The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider
The headline lot was Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider chassis 2935GT. Artcurial’s record says the car entered Baillon’s collection in November 1971, after earlier ownership that included actor Alain Delon and designer Paul Bouvot. So, yes: the Ferrari associated with Delon was part of the collection.

Artcurial’s catalogue described the Ferrari as original and preserved, and called it “probably never dismantled.” Those are the auction house’s sales-catalogue claims about the car, rather than independently established findings here. The car’s identity, chassis number and auction result are recorded on Artcurial’s official lot page.
How much did the Baillon Ferrari sell for?
| Figure | What it means | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| €9,500,000–€12,000,000 | Presale estimate for Ferrari 2935GT; not its sale price. | Artcurial’s 2015 lot record |
| €16,288,000 | Recorded sale price for the Ferrari. | Artcurial’s 2015 lot record |
| €16.4 million | Artcurial’s later rounded description of the same 2015 result, not a new sale or current valuation. | Artcurial Motorcars page, accessed 2026 |
The Ferrari sold above its presale estimate. The exact recorded result is €16,288,000; Artcurial’s later Motorcars page rounds that historical amount to €16.4 million. The auction record and retrospective figure refer to the same sale, not two different transactions.

Was it really the world’s most valuable barn find?
“The world’s most valuable barn find” is a headline-style description, not a current ranking established by these records. The available figures document one famous result: the Ferrari’s 2015 sale. They do not establish the present market value of that car, a current record-holder, or the total value of the Baillon collection. The 2014 estimate and 2015 hammer result should therefore be read as historical auction figures, not as a present-day appraisal.
