The federal EV tax credit of up to $7,500 is no longer available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Congress ended the new, used and commercial clean-vehicle credits through Public Law 119-21, commonly called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. A limited transition rule may still cover some buyers who both signed a binding contract and made a payment by the deadline.
Is the $7,500 EV tax credit still available?
No, not for a vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025. The IRS states that the New Clean Vehicle Credit, Previously-Owned Clean Vehicle Credit and Qualified Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit “are not available for vehicles acquired after Sept. 30, 2025.” IRS clean-vehicle credit guidance explains the current cutoff. The termination was enacted by Public Law 119-21; the Congressional Research Service describes the law as repealing the clean-vehicle credits.
What the $7,500 credit covered
Before it ended, the Section 30D new clean vehicle credit offered a maximum of $7,500, subject to vehicle, battery, taxpayer and other eligibility requirements. It was not an automatic $7,500 discount for every EV buyer. IRS material for the former credit described two potential $3,750 components tied to battery-related requirements. IRS Bulletin 2024-27 explains that historical structure.
The other federal vehicle credits also ended for post-deadline acquisitions: the previously owned clean vehicle credit, historically worth up to $4,000, and the qualified commercial clean vehicle credit, which had separate rules. The cutoff applies across these vehicle-credit categories, not just to new passenger EVs.

Could a late delivery still qualify?
Possibly, but placing an order or making a reservation was not enough by itself. For the transition rule, a buyer had to enter a written binding contract and make a payment on or before September 30, 2025. According to IRS FAQ FS-2025-05, issued August 21, 2025, a qualifying buyer could take possession later and claim the credit when the vehicle was placed in service, provided all other requirements were met.
The IRS describes placing a vehicle in service as taking possession. Acquisition did not by itself complete the claim: the buyer also needed to meet the applicable requirements and have required seller documentation and reporting. If you are relying on a pre-deadline contract, review the IRS guidance and your purchase and payment records; an individual tax professional can assess how the rule applies to your circumstances.

Did Trump cancel the EV tax credit?
The credit ended through legislation: Public Law 119-21, signed in 2025, terminated the federal clean-vehicle credits for vehicles acquired after September 30 of that year. The IRS now administers the resulting cutoff. The prior headline described a proposal as being “on the chopping block”; that framing is outdated because the deadline has passed and the termination is in effect.
What about the EV charger tax credit?
The separate federal credit for certain refueling property, including qualifying EV charging equipment, had a later deadline than the vehicle credits. The IRS says property placed in service after June 30, 2026 is not eligible; that date has also passed. A charger credit was a separate incentive and did not replace the credit for buying an EV. See the IRS clean-vehicle and refueling-property guidance for the applicable rules.

How many people claimed the credits before they ended?
These figures describe 2023 claims, not current eligibility or use. In its December 12, 2025 report, the Congressional Research Service, using IRS Statistics of Income data, reported 487,990 recipients of the new clean vehicle credit, with an average credit of $6,709. It reported 28,180 recipients of the previously owned clean vehicle credit, averaging $3,392. CRS Insight IN12625 provides the historical figures.

Federal vehicle-credit termination does not establish whether a state, city, utility or other local program is available where you live. Incentives vary by location and program rules.
