Playground Games announced the destination on September 25, 2025, then showed the first gameplay on January 22, 2026. The game’s Japan is a condensed, purpose-built driving world—not a mile-for-mile recreation of the country—with Tokyo streets, mountain passes and rural scenery among its confirmed inspirations.
When was Forza Horizon 6 confirmed for Japan?
Playground Games revealed Japan as the next Horizon destination during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show livestream on September 25, 2025. The studio described Japan as a highly requested location among the Forza Horizon community. That announcement confirmed the setting; it was not a gameplay reveal. Playground Games’ announcement introduced the destination.
The first gameplay arrived later, during Xbox Developer_Direct on January 22, 2026. The same announcement gave the launch timing and platforms, while subsequent official coverage filled in the map and feature details. The first-gameplay and release announcement is the source for those January details.
What will Japan look like in Forza Horizon 6?
The announced world brings together urban, rural, modern and traditional settings, with varied biomes and seasonal conditions. The April 8, 2026 map reveal highlighted Tokyo City, routes inspired by Tokyo’s C1 loop and Ginkgo Avenue, and mountain roads associated with Mt. Haruna and the Bandai Azuma area. These are recognizable inspirations within a game map, not a promise that the real routes or the country have been recreated in full. The official map reveal names these locations and describes the world as dense and vertical.

A designed interpretation, not a complete replica
Playground Games’ design intent is to capture a sense of Japan in a condensed world suited to driving. Design Director Torben Ellert told Xbox Wire: “It’s easy to think of an authentic space as a recreation of a place, but it’s less about that accuracy, and more about the feel of it,” Ellert explains. He also said: “You don’t recreate every corner – you recreate the experience of having something revealed when you get there.” Ellert’s interview explains the approach.
What gameplay and world features have been announced?
In its February 9, 2026 feature overview, Playground Games described returning seasonal changes with more dramatic variation than in Mexico. Japan’s alpine region is designed to have snow throughout the year, and players can drive there on snow tires. The overview also introduced Horizon Rush obstacle-course events as part of progression toward becoming a Horizon Legend. These are publisher-described features, not independent test findings.

Meetups and building
The announced shared-world activities include Time Attack Circuits, Car Meets and Drag Meets. Players can customize garages and build in The Estate, a space within the open world. Horizon CoLab is for collaborative EventLab construction; the overview distinguishes that group-building mode from solo customization of garages and The Estate.
Other announced driving and customization additions
- Aftermarket Cars and a proximity radar.
- Revised audio and window liveries.
- Separate front- and rear-wheel rim choices and cosmetic tire wear.
- Steering animations with up to 540 degrees of wheel rotation.
Xbox Wire’s May 18, 2026 launch preview also described a Journal for documenting and photographing places, map fog-of-war that reveals explored areas, and photography features for recording landmarks and points of interest. The launch preview gives further detail on those exploration tools.

Which platforms and access options were announced?
As stated in Playground Games’ January 22, 2026 announcement, the game was scheduled for May 19, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Microsoft Store and Steam. Premium Edition early access was scheduled to begin May 15. The announcement said a PS5 version was planned for later in 2026; that is the plan stated on January 22, not confirmation of its current release status.
The January announcement also named Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass as launch access routes from May 19. It specified Xbox Series X|S access for Ultimate, PC access through the Xbox app, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Playground Games’ February feature overview said cross-play and cross-save support Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PS5 and Steam. It also described Xbox Play Anywhere for digital purchases on Xbox or through Microsoft Store on Windows, excluding Steam. The feature overview lists the cross-play, cross-save and Play Anywhere details.

Which cars were shown in the first gameplay reveal?
The January 22 announcement identified the cover cars as the 2025 GR GT Prototype and the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. It also described a pre-tuned Ferrari J50 as a preorder bonus for purchases made before launch at that time. That was a time-limited offer described in the January announcement, not confirmation that the bonus remains available.
