Better Homes & Gardens (BHG) tested 20 car vacuums in a laboratory and then used the leading models at home for up to six months; its results were updated February 3, 2026.

The best car vacuums, explained
WORX Power Share Cube Vac (WX030L): best overall
BHG found the WORX especially effective on embedded pet hair and dirt. Its flexible 4-foot hose keeps the motor body out of awkward corners while the brush and crevice nozzles handle seats, mats and console gaps. Two power settings let you trade suction for runtime, and the removable HEPA filter simplifies maintenance.
The 6-ounce bin is adequate for one cleaning session in BHG’s testing, but frequent detailers may empty it more often. High power is loud. BHG was still using this vacuum in a car and around the house six months after testing, a useful indication that it is more than a one-time emergency tool.

ANKO Handheld Car Vacuum Cleaner: best corded option
The ANKO’s 16.4-foot cord can reach throughout a typical car without battery-management worries. BHG found strong pickup from the vacuum body and a roomy bin, while the 1.44-pound weight keeps longer sessions comfortable.
The small attachments have weaker suction than the main body, although their size helps them reach beneath seats and into narrow spaces. Choose the ANKO when you can clean near an outlet and value consistent, effectively unlimited runtime over cordless storage convenience.
DeWalt 20-Volt Bagless Cordless Handheld Vacuum: best attachments
This is the most complete accessory set in the group: flexible hose, extension tube, crevice nozzle, gulper brush, round brush, floor nozzle, LED, belt hook, accessory holder and HEPA filter. BHG saw effective one-pass pickup of pet hair and hard-surface dirt and successful cat-litter cleanup.

Softer sand and dirt needed extra passes. At 6.82 pounds, it is substantially heavier than the other handhelds, so the accessory reach is valuable but the body can feel tiring during a full interior detail. The 20-volt battery and charger are separate purchases unless you already own compatible DeWalt tools.
Ridgid Cordless Hand Vacuum: best for pet hair
BHG recorded one-pass Cheerios pickup from floor-mat crevices and strong pet-hair performance, including on a back seat used by a large dog. That makes the Ridgid a compelling choice for owners who regularly transport pets or deal with larger, stubborn debris.
The body is bulky in tight spaces. Its 22-minute test runtime is practical for a car, but the battery and charger are sold separately, so include those items in the total cost if you are not already invested in the platform.

Bissell AeroSlim Lithium Cordless Handheld Vacuum: best for quick touch-ups
At 1.37 pounds, the AeroSlim is the easiest model here to grab for sand, dirt, small rocks and an occasional spill. Its two-in-one crevice tool and dusting brush cover basic spot cleaning, and the 12-minute battery suits short jobs.
Its small bin needs frequent emptying, and the cylindrical body can roll during storage. BHG found the suction insufficient for deep cleaning, so treat this as a maintenance vacuum rather than a replacement for a full-size shop or household vacuum.
How to choose a car vacuum
Corded versus cordless power
A corded vacuum avoids recharge limits and generally maintains suction as long as it is plugged in. Cleaning near an outlet is the trade-off. BHG’s expert, Sarah McAllister of GoCleanCo, prefers corded vacuums for “the best, longest lasting suction power,” while noting that “a cordless vacuum is better than no vacuum!”

Cordless models are easier to store in a vehicle and faster to deploy away from a garage. Compare the measured runtime with the condition of your interior: a neglected, sandy cabin may require more than one charge, while routine crumb removal usually will not.
Reach and attachments
Prioritize a crevice tool for the gap between a seat and center console, seat rails and door pockets. McAllister describes these areas as “almost impossible to reach with a regular vacuum hose.” A flexible hose or extension keeps the motor out of the way; a soft brush is useful for vents, dashboards and fabric mats.
Suction for your actual debris
Airflow is sometimes reported as CFM (cubic feet per minute). BHG reports 27.5 CFM for the WORX and 46 CFM for the DeWalt, but those figures do not by themselves predict how quickly your car will clean. One- or two-pass pickup on your typical debris—pet hair, crumbs, sand, rocks or dirt—is the more practical test.

BHG’s five recommendations span roughly 2 pounds to just under 7 pounds. Lighter bodies are easier for overhead and dashboard work; larger bins reduce interruptions. In BHG’s individual cleaning sessions, all five completed the job without stopping to empty, despite the WORX’s 6-ounce bin and the DeWalt’s approximately 23-ounce capacity.
A practical cleaning method
- Remove loose items. Take out floor mats, child-seat accessories and anything that blocks seat rails.
- Start high. Vacuum the dashboard, console and seat surfaces before the floor so falling debris is collected later.
- Use the crevice tool. Work along seat-console gaps, rails, door pockets and mat edges.
- Switch tools for materials. Use a brush on fabric and vents; avoid stiff bristles on leather unless the vehicle maker permits them.
- Finish the floor and mats. Use the floor or gulper nozzle where supplied, then make a second pass over sand and dirt that remains embedded.
- Empty and maintain the vacuum. Empty the bin before storage and clean or replace the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Care and safety notes
- Check the vehicle and vacuum manuals before using stiff bristles on leather; BHG warns that leather is more prone to scratching.
- Keep filters clear. A loaded filter reduces airflow and can make a capable vacuum appear weak.
- For cordless units, confirm whether a battery and charger are included in the exact model listing.
- Do not force large debris into a narrow nozzle; use the wider opening or remove the item by hand.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the WORX for the strongest all-round balance of pickup, hose access and everyday versatility. Choose the ANKO if you can use an outlet and want uninterrupted corded cleaning. Choose the DeWalt when an extensive attachment system matters and you already own its batteries. Choose the Ridgid for recurring pet hair and larger debris. Choose the Bissell AeroSlim when the priority is a lightweight vacuum for quick, frequent touch-ups rather than deep cleaning.
