Short answer: Tesla reportedly offered FSD (Supervised) for $49 per month to some vehicles that already had Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) in January 2026. It was not a universal Tesla price, and there is no verified Tesla statement calling it compensation for Autopilot’s product changes. Tesla’s official U.S. support page listed FSD at $99 per month as of August 18, 2026.
What the $49 offer actually was
The $49 figure came from contemporaneous reporting about a targeted offer for qualifying EAP-equipped vehicles, not from a permanent nationwide FSD price. The reported offer applied to certain accounts and vehicles that had already purchased Enhanced Autopilot, a package positioned between Tesla’s basic driver assistance and FSD. Not a Tesla App reported the EAP-linked offer in January 2026.
Eligibility can depend on the vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, Tesla Account, market and Tesla’s current offer. An EAP-equipped used car therefore does not guarantee that its current owner will see $49 in the Tesla app.
What the price means in dollars
| Monthly rate | Annualized cost | Five-year cost | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| $49 | $588 | $2,940 | Reported January 2026 offer for some EAP-equipped vehicles |
| $99 | $1,188 | $5,940 | Tesla’s published U.S. price as of August 18, 2026 |
The calculations exclude tax, future price changes, pauses and regional differences. At those rates, the difference is $600 per year or $3,000 over five years.

What Tesla’s price is now
Tesla’s current U.S. FSD support page lists $99 per month, says FSD is subscription-only and warns that pricing and feature availability may change. Check the offer displayed for your own vehicle and account rather than assuming the January price remains available: Tesla FSD support.
Tesla says FSD is not available for outright purchase on that page. Reporting on the policy shift dated January 14, 2026 said Tesla was moving FSD access to subscriptions, with February 14, 2026 reported as the end of the upfront-purchase option. The official support page is the stronger source for current availability.
Timeline of Tesla’s software transition
- January 14, 2026: Reporting said Tesla would move FSD (Supervised) toward a subscription-only model.
- January 23, 2026: Reporting described a transition away from the traditional Autopilot purchase path for new U.S. and Canadian orders.
- February 14, 2026: Contemporary coverage reported the end of the outright FSD purchase option.
- March 31, 2026: Tesla’s FSD transfer program ended.
- August 18, 2026: Tesla’s official U.S. support page listed FSD at $99 per month.
The January reports are described by TechCrunch’s subscription coverage and its report on the Autopilot transition.
What changed with Autopilot
“Autopilot demise” is an imprecise description. Tesla changed the commercial package and naming strategy; it did not remove every driver-assistance function from every vehicle.

| System or package | What it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC) | Maintains a set speed and following distance. | The driver remains responsible for steering and supervision. |
| Basic steering assistance | Provides steering assistance under defined conditions. | Availability varies by vehicle, software and region. |
| Enhanced Autopilot | Historically added features such as automatic lane changes, Navigate on Autopilot, Autopark and Summon. | Feature availability depended on vehicle, hardware, region and software. |
| FSD (Supervised) | Adds broader supervised assistance, including navigation on city streets, turns, intersections, lane changes and parking-related functions. | Requires active driver supervision and does not make the car autonomous. |
Tesla’s current standard-equipment material emphasizes TACC and active-safety features: Tesla active safety and TACC support. Tesla’s Model 3 manual also distinguishes TACC from FSD (Supervised): Model 3 owner’s manual.
Was $49 compensation for Autopilot?
There is no verified evidence that Tesla formally characterized the offer as compensation. Calling it compensation is an interpretation, not an announced refund, legal remedy or admission of liability.
Why owners might view it that way
EAP customers had already paid for an intermediate driver-assistance bundle. If Tesla reduced emphasis on the Autopilot product path and made FSD the main paid tier, a lower FSD rate could be seen informally as recognizing that earlier spend.
Why Tesla might have offered it commercially
- Customer conversion: A lower marginal price could move EAP owners into recurring FSD subscriptions.
- Product simplification: Making FSD the primary paid software tier reduces the number of packages Tesla must sell and explain.
- Retention: A targeted rate could soften the transition and increase adoption without lowering the published price for every owner.
Those are plausible business explanations, not confirmed Tesla motives.

What subscribing gives you—and what it does not
Tesla calls the product FSD (Supervised). Its support material says the system requires active driver supervision, does not replace the driver and does not make the vehicle autonomous. Feature access can vary by hardware, software version, model, trim, region and regulatory approval. Use “supervised driver assistance,” not unqualified “self-driving,” when describing it.
The subscription also does not create a refund right. Tesla’s subscription information says refunds are unavailable. You can cancel at any time, but access continues until the end of the current billing period: Tesla FSD subscription terms.

Tesla’s published paths may have slightly different labels after software updates.
In the Tesla app
- Open the Tesla app.
- Tap Upgrades.
- Tap Software Upgrades.
- Tap Subscribe.
- Tap Add for FSD.
On the vehicle touchscreen
- Open Controls.
- Tap Upgrades.
- If the vehicle is eligible, select the FSD subscription.
- Swipe to subscribe.
The Tesla Account owner generally must initiate the subscription, and the vehicle may need an over-the-air update before features appear. Hardware and regional restrictions can prevent eligibility.

Used cars, transfers and the ownership trap
A subscription follows the subscribing account and vehicle eligibility; a previous owner’s subscription does not automatically transfer to a buyer. Tesla says its FSD transfer program ended March 31, 2026. Its policy also says a completed transfer cannot be reversed, FSD cannot be transferred to another Tesla Account, and transferred FSD stays with the vehicle if that vehicle is later sold. Used-car eligibility depends on how the previous owner obtained FSD: Tesla FSD transfer policy.
A used Tesla may retain purchased FSD if it was not transferred, but that is a vehicle-history and account-record question, not something a buyer should assume from a listing. The end of transfers makes software entitlement a significant resale and purchase check.
Who should consider paying?
FSD may fit
- Owners who drive frequently and use city-street navigation, turns, lane changes or parking features.
- EAP owners whose Tesla app still shows a discounted offer.
- Drivers who prefer a monthly commitment over a large upfront payment.
- Owners eligible for a Tesla Insurance FSD-related benefit in their state.
FSD may not fit
- Drivers who mainly want highway speed and following-distance control; TACC and standard active safety may cover that need.
- Infrequent drivers who would not use the additional functions.
- Owners with incompatible hardware or regional restrictions.
- Anyone expecting autonomous operation.
- Drivers who dislike recurring charges, nonrefundable billing or possible price and feature changes.
- Commercial or fleet users whose agreement may limit use; review the Tesla Drive Anywhere Agreement.
Tesla Insurance benefits are not universal. Availability and any premium benefit depend on state, policy conditions, policy date and the applicable Safety Score program: Tesla Insurance FSD information.
What owners should verify before subscribing
- The exact monthly price shown in the Tesla app for your account and vehicle.
- Whether your hardware and software support the features you expect.
- Which functions are available in your jurisdiction.
- That cancellation is not a prorated refund.
- That Tesla may change pricing, features and availability.
- Whether a used vehicle has retained purchased FSD or only has an account-based subscription history.
The Bottom Line
The $49 FSD price was a reported, EAP-linked offer—not a universal rate and not verified compensation for Autopilot’s restructuring. Tesla’s published U.S. price is currently $99 per month, with subscription-only access, no subscription refunds and no current FSD transfer program. Check the Tesla app for your vehicle’s actual offer, and treat FSD as supervised driver assistance rather than autonomous driving.
