The biggest change to the Subaru Outback is its shape. The seventh-generation 2026 model is taller and more upright, with a boxier profile intended to make the long-running wagon look more like a conventional SUV. Subaru revealed it in April 2025 and originally said it would reach U.S. retailers in late 2025, so “arrives next week” is no longer current as of September 30, 2026.
What changed most in the 2026 Outback?
The redesign changes the Outback’s visual identity more than its footprint. Subaru describes a broader-looking front, a more upright fascia, a boxier side profile and more upright rear pillars. The result is a vehicle that looks more like an SUV than previous Outbacks, while retaining broadly similar exterior dimensions.
Subaru says overall height is the exception: the 2026 model is 1.4 inches taller than the outgoing generation. The manufacturer has attributed improved rear access and cargo usability to the new shape, but the available specifications do not support describing the redesign as a substantial increase in length or width.
Does the new shape create more room?
Subaru reports 34.6 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seats, up from 32.6 cubic feet in the prior generation. That seats-up figure is different from the model’s maximum cargo capacity: Subaru lists up to 80.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The 2026 feature page also lists 112.3 cubic feet of passenger volume.

What changed inside?
The cabin’s main technology update is a standard 12.1-inch center touchscreen paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Subaru says the touchscreen has a faster processor than before. The company also specifies dedicated physical climate-control buttons and knobs, rather than relying entirely on the touchscreen for those adjustments.
Subaru lists wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on every trim. These changes update the interface, but the larger screens do not mean every function has been moved into menus: key climate controls remain physical.

Which engines and trims are available?
Subaru’s August 21, 2025 U.S. pricing announcement assigns the naturally aspirated engine to the Premium, Limited and Touring trims, and the turbocharged engine to Limited XT, Touring XT and Wilderness. The announced specifications are:
| Trims named in Subaru’s August 2025 release | Engine | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Premium, Limited, Touring | 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder | 180 hp |
| Limited XT, Touring XT, Wilderness | 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder | 260 hp |
That release pairs both engine families with Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The powertrain, equipment, towing rating and ground clearance are useful points to compare when choosing a trim; check the current production specifications for the exact trim you are considering.

What is new about EyeSight and driver assistance?
Subaru says the updated EyeSight system combines three forward-facing cameras with added radar sensors. Depending on trim, available features include Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection, Pre-Curve Speed Control, Highway Active Lane Change Assist, Highway Automatic Resume Assist and driver-supported Highway Hands-Free Assist at speeds up to 85 mph.
Hands-Free Assist is not fully autonomous. Subaru says the driver must keep eyes on the road; availability also depends on trim. Treat it as a driver-assistance feature, not permission to stop monitoring the vehicle.

What should roof-rack shoppers know?
The Outback has raised roof rails, and Subaru describes crossbar-positioning marks intended to help with accessory placement. Its 2025 reveal release gives roof-rail ratings of 800 pounds static and 220 pounds dynamic. Static and dynamic ratings refer to different conditions; the 800-pound static figure is not a load rating for driving with that weight on the roof.
Crossbars are an accessory, not something the cited release says is included or required. Before buying, verify that the crossbars fit the 2026 model year and the specific trim and roof-rail setup.

When did the 2026 Outback arrive, and what did it cost?
Subaru unveiled the U.S. model at the New York International Auto Show on April 16, 2025; Subaru Corporation’s international release is dated April 18, 2025. Subaru initially projected arrival at U.S. retailers in late 2025. That launch forecast is historical, so check current dealer inventory for availability.
Subaru’s August 21, 2025 release announced a $34,995 starting MSRP and six trims. That is a dated announced price, not a current dealer quote or an assurance of today’s price. Verify current official pricing, local inventory and any applicable offers before shopping. Subaru’s original reveal also cautioned that its figures were preliminary: “Specifications are preliminary and subject to change before production.”
Why does this redesign matter?
The Outback has been part of Subaru’s U.S. lineup for decades. In a 2025 release marking the model’s 30th anniversary, Subaru said U.S. sales had exceeded 3 million. The seventh generation’s most conspicuous change is therefore a notable design turn for an established nameplate: it adopts a more upright, SUV-like look without a comparably large change to most exterior dimensions.
