The Honda Prelude is back for the 2026 model year as a front-wheel-drive hybrid coupe. Its headline feature, S+ Shift, simulates stepped gear changes—including rev-matched downshifts—but the car does not have a conventional eight-speed gearbox. In the U.S., Honda lists 200 horsepower, EPA fuel economy of 44 mpg combined and a starting MSRP of $42,000 before destination.
What the 2026 Prelude is—and when it arrived
The sixth-generation Prelude pairs a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine with Honda’s two-motor hybrid system. Honda announced the U.S. 2026 model on September 4, 2025; its later U.S. launch release said the car was arriving at Honda dealers. Honda positions it as a sporty coupe with a grand-touring emphasis, rather than presenting the hybrid system as a conventional transmission-and-engine setup. Honda’s U.S. announcement
Market details matter: the U.S. price and specifications below are for the U.S. 2026 model. Honda’s Japan-market launch occurred on September 5, 2025, with different pricing.
U.S. price and fuel economy
American Honda Motor Co. listed a U.S. MSRP of $42,000, excluding a $1,195 destination charge, for the well-equipped trim. With that charge, the stated total is $43,195. These are manufacturer-published MSRP figures, not dealer transaction prices; incentives and dealer pricing may differ. Honda reported EPA ratings of 46 mpg city, 41 highway and 44 combined. For Japan, Honda Global listed a price of 6,179,800 yen when the car went on sale there on September 5, 2025. That is the Japan-market price, not a conversion or equivalent U.S. MSRP. Honda Global’s Japan launch announcement
How the hybrid system and S+ Shift work
Two-motor hybrid power, not a conventional gearbox
Honda lists 200 total system horsepower and 232 lb-ft of electric-motor torque for the U.S. model. Its two-motor system does not use a traditional transmission or CVT: propulsion is delivered primarily by the traction motor through a fixed ratio, while engine power can be blended through a lock-up clutch. 2026 Prelude specifications

S+ Shift imitates stepped changes
Honda describes S+ Shift as a control mode that coordinates the engine, high-power motor and paddle shifters to create simulated shifts. Its effects include simulated rev matching, downshift blips and the ability to hold a simulated gear. Honda’s Japan technical description characterizes the system as emulating a virtual eight-speed transmission; that refers to the shifting sensation and control logic, not eight physical gears. The system’s stated purpose is to make acceleration and deceleration feel more like stepped shifts, rather than to turn the hybrid into a mechanical eight-speed car. Chassis, drive modes and layout
Honda says the Prelude is the first of its hybrid models to use high-performance chassis hardware derived from the Civic Type R. The U.S. specifications list a dual-axis front suspension, adaptive dampers and four-piston Brembo aluminum front calipers; Honda also cites wide tracks and large brakes. These are manufacturer-stated hardware and positioning details, not independent road-test findings. 2026 Prelude specifications

The U.S. model is front-wheel drive and has four drive modes: Comfort, GT, Sport and Individual. Individual allows the driver to tailor settings. Honda describes its intended character as sporty but comfortable for grand touring; the available specifications do not establish how it compares dynamically with other coupes in independent testing.
How it differs from a Toyota GR86
The Prelude and Toyota GR86 approach the sporty-coupe idea differently. The Prelude is a front-wheel-drive hybrid with simulated shifts; the GR86 is rear-wheel drive and is available with a manual transmission. An Associated Press report of Edmunds testing said the manual GR86 completed Edmunds’ 0–60 mph test in 6.0 seconds. That is a GR86 test result, not a direct comparison with the Prelude, and the cited report does not establish a complete current price comparison. Associated Press report of Edmunds’ coupe test

What Honda says the return is meant to do
Honda has framed the Prelude’s return as part of its effort to make hybrid models feel engaging as well as efficient. Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of Honda National Auto Sales, said the return “demonstrates our commitment to exciting, fun-to-drive vehicles and will help to accelerate our hybrid-electric sales in the years ahead.” That is Honda’s stated corporate intent, not an independent assessment of the car’s driving experience.
