The 2024 Volkswagen California is a camper van based on the long-wheelbase Multivan, with two sliding doors, five announced versions and a choice of camping layouts. Volkswagen’s official material reviewed here does not confirm that it is available in the United States or announce a U.S. launch. Its North American announcement was for the separate ID. Buzz.
What is the new Volkswagen California?
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles announced the New California on 7 May 2024. It is designed to combine the everyday usability of an MPV with camper equipment, and is based on the long-wheelbase Multivan. Volkswagen said orders in Germany would open in June 2024; that announcement does not establish current availability in other markets. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ launch announcement named five versions: Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean.
Two sliding side doors are standard, providing access from either side. The kitchen equipment is one of the clearest distinctions among the versions for which Volkswagen describes it: Beach Camper has a compact kitchen at the rear, while Coast and Ocean have a full kitchenette on the driver’s side. The reviewed sources do not provide a complete, market-by-market comparison of seating and sleeping configurations for all five versions.
How do the California’s camping layouts work?
Volkswagen presents the camper setup as three zones: the cabin, the sleeping area and the space outside the van. The second sliding door helps make the interior accessible from both sides, while the kitchen arrangements vary by version. Volkswagen Vans UK describes outdoor cooking and sheltered dining beneath an optional awning on its New California page. An awning’s fitment should be checked for the specific vehicle and equipment before buying one.

Beach versions
The Beach Camper adds a rear mini-kitchen. Volkswagen also announced Beach and Beach Tour versions, but the cited launch material does not provide enough detail for a full equipment comparison among the three Beach models.
Coast and Ocean
Coast and Ocean are described with a full kitchenette on the driver’s side. The sources reviewed do not establish every equipment difference between these two versions, so a local specification sheet is needed for a detailed comparison.

What powertrains did Volkswagen announce?
Volkswagen announced plug-in hybrid technology and all-wheel drive as new features for the California range. That range-level announcement does not show which combination is offered with each trim in every country. Check the current specification for the country and version you are considering rather than assuming all five versions share the same drivetrain. Volkswagen’s launch announcement is the source for the range-level claim.
Can you buy the Volkswagen California in the United States?
The official sources reviewed for this article do not confirm current U.S. sales or a future U.S. launch of the New California. Volkswagen’s 2024 announcement described German ordering, while its North American announcement concerned the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz, a separate model—not the California camper van. That North American ID. Buzz announcement does not establish California availability. The available evidence is not enough to conclude that the California is permanently unavailable in the United States or to explain why it is not confirmed there. For a current answer, ask Volkswagen directly or check an official U.S. market listing.

When it announced the new generation on 7 May 2024, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles said that more than 280,000 California vans had been produced. That is a historical production figure stated at the time of the announcement, not a current sales total. Volkswagen’s announcement places the new model in a long-running camper-van line, but the figure does not predict whether or when this generation will reach the U.S.

What to verify before comparing versions
- Confirm which of the five announced versions is offered in your country and what equipment it includes.
- Compare kitchen type and placement: rear mini-kitchen on Beach Camper versus driver-side full kitchenette on Coast and Ocean.
- Check the local trim sheet for the available powertrain and whether it includes plug-in hybrid technology and all-wheel drive.
- Verify seating, sleeping and accessory details for the exact model year and version; the cited material does not supply a complete market-by-market specification.
